Hi All,

I have got a Audi A2 1.6fsi, after driving for 30 minutes and the car temperature gets to 90c water coming out of
expansion bottle. The water is not hot but cold, how ever the engine block is hot.

Any ideas ?

Thanks Guys

Les.

Hi Les, I'm sure there will be much wiser people than me come along, but it could be a head gasket, the expansion bottle seal is damaged or worn? broken coolant sensor, water pump gone?. Do you get hot air in the car? are the coolant pipes (the large ones running to the rad hot or cold? Is the water coming out of the lid of the expansion bottle or out of the overflow (that you can tell).

Loads of questions, but all will help.

Hi Mrbroons,

New water pump fitted, and expansion bottle seal ok and had both coolant sensor changed. Water is coming out of the overflow.

Thanks

Les.

I had a similar problem with overflow at the expansion tank, a little port on the side of the coolant expansion tank. I let it cool down and filled the reservoir but as soon the engine reached operating temperature it started overflow again. The reason for the owerflow was the O-ring that seals between the cap and the expantion tank. As you know, water is boiling at the engines operating temperature of 105 degrees Celsius.
After replacing the lid everything works perfekt.

These caps sound like they are consumable by all accounts. I may buy a couple and change them over to prevent any future problems. Anyone have a link to a tried brand or is an Audi only job?

FSI cooling system is very different from other variants of the A2...…….there are some VW self study details on the web which explain the differences.
Of course I'm sure you know the FSI runs at 110 degs so a good quality antifreeze is a must and any cooling system faults however small must be repaired ASAP.
Expansion bottle pressure caps are really best viewed as a service item, to keep the cooling system in tip top condition its probably best changed every year for what they cost...
Thermostats are electrically controlled by the engine ecu and activated under a number of different paramaters........

Febi expansion caps have worked fine on all three of my cars (AUA, AMF, BHC) and have the same original part number on the BAD - 7 or 8 quid if I remember.
VAG reference - 1J0121321B, Febi part 14700
