Audi A2 Engine Swap

I own an A2 1.4 TDI (90 bhp) which has a minor hydraulic fault with the engine, that i bought as it was being broken up for parts. Its engine is in perfect working order (other than aforementioned hydraulic fault) but the body has had large amounts of trim and panels removed in a not particularly careful manner, leading to cracks and other damage to its bodywork and electrics.
Last week I saw an advert for an A2 1.6 FSI near me that has a suspected head gasket issue, but its bodywork is in decent condition. This leads to my question: Would it be possible for me to take the engine (once repaired) out of my 1.4 and put it into the body of the 1.6? Any reply's appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the A2OC :)

Unfortunately not as I believe the 1.6 FSI engine is bigger and has different ways of being mounted to the frame. I think you could swap the engines over but it would require modification :)

More experts will be along soon :) (I’m no expert lol)

Thanks :)

That's not the worst problem. You have to convert everything from petrol to diesel. Why not repair or replace the panels needed on the diesel? But it is a good idea to throw away the FSI engine.:p:D?

I also forgot you have to swap the wiring loom for the engine etc lol silly me ?

The FSI is a good engine. WHEN ITS RUNNING RIGHT !!! otherwise they tend to like emptying your pockets every month lol ? (unless mine and many others have a crush on their mechanic?)

And instrument panel and ECU and battery . That is a project to keep you occupied for a LONG time.

Firstly thanks for the response. Secondly, are the mountings on the other 1.4 engines the same or would it require a similar mounting conversion?
Also in regards to repairing the 1.6 engine, My brother already owns a A2 1.4 TDI (90 bhp) so i would rather try to find a way to use my 1.4 engine as then we would be able to exchange spares/knowledge etc. Thanks again for any reply's.

To be honest I’m unsure:rolleyes:. I’m sure @audifan will answer your questions soon

To be honest I’d fix the panels on the A2 you have it will be way easier. Will save you changing fuel pumps ECU’S and wiring looms etc :)

It would be a nightmare to swop all the parts over,it can be done but a heck of a lot of work, basically everything mechanically needs to be changed over, all wiring looms, fuel tank, fuel pump and lines, clocks, ecu, bigger battery,Ect ect, then there will be the v5 to be altered and may have to be re registered (Q plate) and under go checks.

Thanks
Pete

Well considering all that i think i will replace the panel's. Would it be possible to use the power stearing pump from the 1.6 in the 1.4?

That's a better idea........I carn't see a problem using the power pump or any other steering gear.

Or to put it another way you have almost listed all the parts that are interchangeable between the two.

If you want to see what parts from different spec/engine type vehicle will fit your car try WWW.realoem, it will come up as a BMW parts list in the listing but it has Audi ETKA on there also, just go to the front page click on Audi and then select your model (A2), there is only one choice of model click and you will then get various sections to look at Engine, Body, Electrics etc etc.. most version specific parts are listed using engine type to identify them.....have fun a parts manual can be a great asset when thinking of DIY
