Hi Paul,
Simple answer it could be a number of things, but based on the small amount of information you've given, you should check/replace the following:

- coolant temperature sensor (~£2.50 from ebay for non-genuine, less than a tenner for genuine)
- Fuel filter

and have a read on some other posts, my own non-starting post which you may find useful is only 5 under yours in the forum list! http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?19382-Another-Starting-Problem-but-possibly-a-one-off-!-%281-4-petrol-2003%29

I don't think I had exactly the same symptoms, but could be related/similar.

The smell of fuel you're getting is likely the smell of unburnt fuel from the non-starting, so not really all that surprising. I assume you've checked for leaks though.

When running, is it rough, does it idle nicely?

many thanks for the reply i have been thinking about doing the fuel filter and i have seen somewhere else about the coolant temperature sensor are these both fairly simple jobs to do

Coolant temp sensor is pretty easy, no special skills required apart from small fingers. Have a look at my post/others for instructions. Fuel filter I believe is reasonably easy, but is situated under the car under a cover, so is an "on your back"/"on a ramp" job really, so uncomfortable but simple to do.

i have a similar problem with my a2 so i changed the fuel filter but this didnt cure my problem, can u tell me where the coolant temp sensor is located please so i can try that. thank you
