Auto headlight conversion with coming home/ leaving home lights

I cut extra holes in the switch recess to lock the switch into and ran about 5mm of tape around the switch body to act as an end stop.

The chrome ring arrived this morning and so I bit the bullet and had a go at opening up the hole for it and the headlamp switch.

I won't be doing that again! I am hopeless with things like this and end up butchering stuff.

I did manage to cut the hole and thanks to the chrome ring the edges are hidden.

One problem I have is that the switch is recessed a LOT (if I engage the locking mechanism in the switch.

The only way I can get the switch further forward is if I don't worry about it engaging in the locking holes?

Is that the issue everyone else had? If so what did you do to bring it further forward? Just glue it in place?

Doesn't that leave the fascia and switch loose?

For now I will leave it and see what I can do

Hi Steve,

That was the issue I found too.

I figured either cut new locking holes in the surround (not sure I could reach) or tape it in place and never remove it.

In the end I had made it squint so it is locked in place by torsion and friction.

Hi

I will need to sort out an installation instruction sheet.
Plus how to set these up, the one that comes with it is not really up to the job.

Steve B

So say someone wanted to adjust the sensitivity of the auto lights because they felt the low beam was too sensitive/
sidelights not sensitive enough.

The 'function setting diagram' isnt clear on how the adjustment is actually performed. Only how to
activate the various modes.. not sure on the adjustment process.

Can anyone shed any light on this/ has anyone managed to decode

What does Figure 9 do ?

Yes found the switch around 1cm too far back.

Did you use anything or just bring it forward?

I wrapped about 20 turns of insulation tape around the barrel of the switch and using a very sharp knife cut around this to reduce the width so it made the end point of how far I wanted the switch to go into the hole. I also cut one locking hole out using the end of my soldering iron and a sharp knife to remove the remaining melted plastic.

This worked for me. Switch pushes back as far as I want it to and locks in place.

Hi Steve, do you still have these available?

Cheers,

Matt.

I have the last couple left now, so if you want one please PM me your full name and address and pay the £30 via PayPal using my [email protected] email address. (Friends and family please)

I will class this as the last one I have, so that I can keep a spare.

Cheers

Can someone scan in the setup instructions? I put mine "away safe" and obviously now can't find them :(

Edit: panic over found them. Think I'll scan them in myself now :)

Hello Steve, I would be interested in one of these sent a PM to you

I only have one unordered one left, but one of the ones I sent is looking like the royal mail have lost it on me, so I need to wait a couple more days to see if it turns up, or I will have to send this one.

I fitted my first out of two switches today. Went all the way with chrome ring and so on.
Working fine, but not locked in position yet.

Looks good and the ring compliments the instrument cluster.

Thanks again for sorting it for me Steve.

Boris

Hi Boris
Looks good.
How do you intend to lock it in?
Also, how did you fix it to the fascia?
I've followed previous posts and got the general idea.
I tried mine a few weeks ago and made a bit of a mess. Fortunately I use a spare fascia as a practice, and I have another.
It would be useful to see a rear view photo to see the cot out and how the switch fits inside.
Thanks
Steve M

Hi Steve, thanks.
Will have a better look at locking it today.
I will put some photos later on.

Hi,
I've been fiddling with the switch and possibilitiy of using original plastic frame to
lock it in as per factory installation.
I have my old dashboard so I started playing around.

FullSizeRender.jpg

I removed the 4 legged switch mount from it in order to
align the switch with fascia.

IMG_2131.JPG

This is what it looked like when locked in, many of you have the same problem.

IMG_2133.JPG

To cut the story short, I removed all 4 legs and realigned the switch.

IMG_2139.JPG

The legs are now glued and setting. I will put more photos later.

And before questions start coming in, I know it might be impossible to remove the base
without removing the dashboard, but I will see how it goes when the glue is set.
In the worst case, I destroyed a useless dashboard (blown airbag), in best-problem solved.

Regards,
Boris

Got mine today and fitted in into the car, a couple of quick questions, due to the switch sitting further in the bezel I cant seem to get the new switch to release the locking catches and so I haven't pushed it into the dash properly yet. Secondly, is it just me or do the instructions for configuring the sensitivity make no sense at all, will check the sensitivity in the morning light but would be nice to know what all the features are as it looks like a fantastic piece of kit with a lot of potential ;)

Hi,
I agree with you re the instructions, not much explanation to understand how it works and yes, great piece of kit.
I'm towards the end in creating a custom made base that hopefully hold the switch at correct depth, so far so good.
I will offer it here FOC for scanning and then someone like Paul (Depronman) or Steve B could print it if there is enough interest and
the price is ok as it is a fairly big piece. I myself would be interested in two of those as the prototype is being cut and glued,
so might lack the strength of a single piece.

Regards,
Boris

So I think I have figured out how to change the mode, there a 3 modes, 1 Second, 3 Second and 5 Second delay in turning the lights on. I haven't got the coming home lights working yet, is this something that needs configuring?

Not sure, mine were working fine if only a bit to short, 5 seconds I think. I would imagine they should stay on for at least 10, maybe it can be configured. I can't play with it now as its been out used for testing the base that I'm working on.
Would be good to hear other people's experiences.
