Auto Lights MOT fail

I have never tried to take the switch apart. In theory anything that is made from individual parts can be taken apart. The problem comes when they glue / weld the component together, but saying that the switch may be screwed and clipped together... Only one way to find out.

I wish you better luck than I had. I tried to dismantle the centre of the light switch to try and replace a blown led. It was not for coming apart at all.

Steve found the auto switch just at the right time and I swapped. I keep a spare for MOT time (but not the one I destroyed)

Good luck

I was not bothered about the automatic switch but thought just a new switch would look so much better than mine so brought one off ebay for £9.89. Changed it over but just as the auto switch I don't get the rear for illumination lamp on.
As this new one looks better I would rather keep it but my question is, can I swap just the switch knob from the new to the old?

Thanks

I think I follow what you want to achieve. When you say 'just as the auto switch' does this imply the one on the left is not an an auto switch, but some other VAG switch?

Out of general interest the A2 switch does come apart into three bits, but I would not recommend taking it apart, lots of fragile tabs.

Believe it or not the finger/thumb grip does pass through the front face plate to give the two parts on the left, which can be separated as shown. The bit on the the left is the electronic back box and the middle bit in the picture is mechanical whose function is the interesting trick of removing the whole thing originally from the dash, and providing the mechanical rotary function as well as supporting the electronic back box.

If, big if, the new mechanical part and old electronic part are fully compatible then you can achieve what you want, but I would not suggest trying it, far too hairy, probably end up with two broken switches. The switch in the picture is scrap so it did not matter, just interest. Neither can you detach the bit you grip from the central rod, it appears to be bonded.

Save up your pennies and buy a hard touch switch, they come up from time to time or a mint soft touch but only drive in the day and then there will be little need to touch it!

Thanks Andy, I’ll give up the idea of taking the switch apart. I’m going to buy a cheap A2 switch and panel off eBay and take my time doing it up with paint and stickers. Don’t want to swap the switches over each year for the mot.
??

I think I was the first to find out that this was a fail - I switched over to the normal version for the MOT and the car passed without any advisories last time out.

I searched around and could not see any solution to the auto switch tell issue - even with replacement. Seems as someone mentioned above they believed no one really needs it and is used instead for programming - silly!

We really do need a good electrician to work out how to either piggy back another led into the housing or how to rewire the existing to work a the tell tale lamp with the possibility of it also being used for programming the switch. Personally I would prefer it to just work as a tell tale.
