Bad Diesel

I have had a starting problem with my 05 75 bhp 1.4 TDi where sometimes the engine just keeps on turning over & over & over until it starts, this first happened after filling up with Shell Standard Diesel & went on for 10 days or so.

Yesterday I filled up again but this time went into an ESSO petrol station & so far which is probably about 10 times starting, it has been perfect :)

Has anyone ever had this kind of problem before or am I just being optimistic thinking I had some bad fuel ?

The only time I had this problem was when I had the fuel filter changed and the housing was not put back in again correctly, so there was a slight air leak.

Had to continually turn it over to prime the fuel system before it would start.

Could be a very clogged fuel filter doing it, unless you have had it changed?

Any fault codes read off??

John

It looks like it was wishfull thinking about the fuel, it did it again this morning after being sat for about an hour after use.

No I have not had the fuel filter changed yet, but it is booked in for a service & cambelt on the 8th Oct so they will change the fuel filter then.

There are no fault codes that would cause this

Looks like it might still be the faulty crankshaft speed sensor or temp sensor which some have reported

Well if the temp sender or crankshaft sender are faulty, you may get implausible signal fault codes being logged or some other one to indicate that the sensor is faulty.

Have you checked the fuel system for leaks?

John

I get the implausible speed error (resulting in the engine light coming on) 3 or 4 times a year on my petrol 1.4SE, but I don't get any starting problems or in fact any other problems. What is it that I need to fix to remedy this error?

No I haven't checked for leaks, but now you mention it, if I park my car with the front higher than the back, like reverse parked on my drive, it starts fine, but if I park it on the level or with the front lower this is when it sometimes struggles.

Where is the most likely place to find a leak ?

Could try the fuel filter housing, which is just in front of the passenger side rear wheel, covered by heat shielding. Most the fuel lines run around that area under the car.

You park up somewhere which allows you to identify anything that has leaked on to the ground.

I just want to bump this post as my friend has a Golf TDI and they filled up their car at the Six Mile garage near Canterbury on Wednesday and on Thursday her car broke down. Contaminated diesel was the issue and it was like Cloudy Orange Squash when they pulled it from the tank. They tried to wiggle out of it but they have a lot of angry customers banging on the door at the moment they have promised to pay for the repairs.

I think this is the problem, I have a lot of diesel around this area & there was a patch on the floor, is this likley to be a rubber hose or something more ?

This does not sound good, I'm thinking the orange squash could be rusty water ? I wonder how they regulate how clean the fuel is ?

It could be a hose but more often than not, the leak is caused by damage to the plastic filter housing which often happens while the filter is being changed. Garages see it as 'just one of those things' and rarely accept any blame. Its worth a try but dont be surprised if you end up paying for a replacement filter housing

Thanks Spike,

Is this an expensive part to replace ? The filter has not been replaced yet it was due to be replaced on october 8th along with the timing belt & full service, it says in the hand book 80k for the timing belt, but I would rather be safe than sorry, mine has 61K on it at the moment.

I had the whole fuel filter & housing replaced today & the car seems to be fine now, my machanic who works for VAG couldn't see any cracks, splits etc on the old fuel filter housing & it was only the bottom part of it that was leaking

Is there a common part of this that fails ?

So it was the same problem that I had then!!!

A garage change my fuel filter and then the housing started leaking.

I believe its due to them damaging the drain nut on removal / refitting so it does not seal properly and hence the leak.

I have change mine since and done it correctly and its been fine and should never fail so long as the filter housing is treated with care when changing the filter
