Recieved and fitted my new battery last Friday
I thought I would try a trickle charge on the old battery
Battery has a date stamp week 41 2003
TDI 90 was registered January 2004 and has done 152k

152K is very good but what's the volts when not connected to a charger? The charger will deliver up to 14.7V but will the battery retain it.

With that high mileage you must be using it as a daily and keeping it well topped up. My first battery lasted 10 years and the most recent just 6 years as it had shorter journeys. It's also been kept outside so low temperatures in winter is not so good. At 0°C it loses 35 percent and starting can take 200% more energy according to one website.

PS Just looked up 12V 100Ah Smart Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery. Cost????? guess and page down...
