battery removal

Age is not necessarily a guide to a battery's condition. The battery on my Lupo 3L is approaching 12 years old and it's capacity is still greater (just) than that specified.

Firstly so many thanks to the posters explaining what to do.
Secondly a single sarcastic thanks to Audi for such an over engineered mess.
Lastly I found that using a thin lever (I used a cycle tyre lever) under that tab holding the foam in place, and levering it away helped a lot.

It is a nightmare of a job.
For me it was far worse as the first battery that an automated tool on retailers website suggested would not fit and so I had to refit the original and then try again.
I ended up buying a Bosch battery and really noticed an improvement in starting after the refit.
It was a nasty job in that experience did not seem to speed it up. I ended up skinning a finger the second time I fitted a new battery.
I shifted my battery as when tested on the service it was only holding 30% charge.
I am glad it is a 10 year job not a more frequent task (touch wood!)

Considering that the battery only needs changing once every 10 years or so, I really don't see why it's a problem. It's not as though it's something that needs to be changed on an annual basis.
Yes, you've got to know how to do it, otherwise you'll end up breaking parts of your car, but the information is here and, so long as you're reasonably happy with the way the A2 is put together, it's a 20 minute job.

Just replaced my 12 year old battery. The old battery was still turning the engine over, but was slooooooow on cold mornings. To avoid getting stranded somewhere and begging strangers for a jump start (been there, done that) with jump leads in my hands, I decided to pre-emptively replace my battery in the cold and dark while keeping one eye on my 2 yr old son...

While I appreciate the build of the A2, the weight saving innovations and clever use of space, I really believe some procedures have been made needlessly difficult.

Battery replacement is one of those procedures, as is air filter replacement.

Yes, agreed.

But with a little brute force on the black polystyrene tool section and a lot of fiddling, you can just force it out to get at the two bolts, but there only needs to be a little more clearance and it would be easy!

Umph.. one question.
Does one need to supply un-interrupted 12 volts to battery cables (from an external power supply) during battery change?

In short, no. But you may be prompted for your stereo's security code if the power is interrupted. You may get lucky, however.

Hi,

In short, no. :p

For early A2's, you'll need the radio code to hand. However, as you've listed your car as 2004, the radio should work again as it learns the car it's fitted to on newer cars with the 2nd generation radios fitted. You'll need to reset the time and re-sync the central locking remotes, but these are both easy and a quick search of the forum will reveal how it's done. :)

Regards,

Matt.

Aside from the fiddlyness, you can be grateful the battery doesn't weigh 28Kg, like the one I just replaced!

I had the battery disconnected for a few hours 5 days ago and I only had to re-sync the remote control. I don't remember the proper procedure but I unlocked the door, started the engine, tuned it of and after that it worked again.

Speaking of the longetivety of batteries. I had to replace mine last winter. It was the original battery, then about 13 years old in cold Sweden. Had no problem cranking, but the voltage must have been low, as the immo didn't start properly and cut the engine out, thinking I didn't have the correct key.

I replaced the battery only last week, it started to labour when starting up so I got an EXIDE for 47 quid, as far as im aware the old battery was the original which would make it 10 years old...Varta. is there any way to check how old the battery is wonder??

Hi

My A2 1.4TDI failed to crank with enthusiasm. It did turn over ever so slowly. Some -25ºC below zero temp drained my battery.

I replaced the old 70Ah capacity battery with a larger one, 95Ah. The new battery is some 3 inches (75mm) longer than the old one. I figured the battery bay is plastic so it's easy to relieve some more real estate for the battery as needed.

My wife's son did the installation indoors just moments ago. He just shaved off some plastic on the battery's clamping lip at the bottom of the battery. This clamping lip is not used on A2 battery bay. A2 uses the longer sides of the battery, hence making these clamping areas redundant at the shorter sides of the battery. Shave 'em off and drop the new baby in - hey presto!

My battery is Bosch S6 AGM, 95Ah model.

Here's the pic I just received on my phone.

How to keep your car locked while trying to charge your main battery and afterwards a neat way of providing a ready source of a jump just in case you need it...

just trying to change may battery for the first time as the orignal, now 18 year old is not holding charge over these cold winer starts..

Make sure you get a good replacement of suitable capacity. Also worth having the alternator output checked.

Hi. I dont know if anyone is on who can help.me. have completely flat battery and bought a new one, but no success getting the old one out. I've undone the star screws but I can't get the trim off the boot because the foam insert is holding it down, but i can't pull the foam insert out as the boot trim is holding that down. I can see the battery bolts but can't get to them with the foam in the way. The foam is too tough to break.
Any help very gratefully recieved . Thank you
