battery top up?

Hi all, Just been checking my battery to see if it needed topping up. I find that the cell/caps are covered with black seal tape (as from new) this can be peeled back to reveal each cell plug. when cell plug/s are removed they have small length of plain tube below the threaded area, at present the acid/water level line is approx 1/4 way up this tube, I need to know if this is correct or not? Audi book states 'to top up to level' what level! no markings anywhere as I can see. The battery is the 'magic eye' type and it's rather difficult to see clearly but I think I can just see slight/green (very faintly), any advice anyone, Cheer's Alan.

As DAZ says, it should be a low maintenance battery. There can be some marking of the level on the outside of the battery, but failing that, if the electrolyte is above the bottom of those tubes then there is probably enough and possibly too much. The cell caps may need to act as vents in the event of gassing, depending on the design of your particular battery.

The important thing is that the level is high enough that the plates are submerged. If you can't see the plates or the separators you're in good shape.

Hi Guys, thanks for your responce's! I finally took the bull by the horn's as they say ,went ahead and topped all cells up to the base of breather tube.
Would like to let you know :my car is 1.4 petrol 2001 reg( march) and the only other person to have owned the car is my daughter who I purchased it from, so car is now good 6 years old /original battery from new, from what I could see the battery was looking as new as day car was purchased so what does that tell you about reliability etc!
