Bench Seat in 3L? Exists?

Hey all!

I've been looking around and trying to figure out if any of the 1.2tdi 3L versions ever came with a bench seat? I cant seem to see any evidence of this!

I know that plenty of the other models had them.

One theory is that they didn't come with the bench seat due to the weight reduction to make it 3L compliant?

Thanks a ton!

My Intercar 2003 price list shows the split rear seats as an option (no cost) so the bench seat was standard. The split seats would certainly be heavier. Most 1.2tdi's seem to have power steering and A/C which makes them D3 and not D4/3L - 86g CO2/km against 81g (3L). You could order a 1.2tdi with split rear seats and/or height adjustable front seats but without P/S and A/C, although I'm not sure whether the car would have been D3 or D4.

Interesting RAB!

I have been looking all around at pictures of A2 1.2's for sale and haven't come across one with a bench seat...

The same price list also states "3 seats rear including 3 headrests" for 1.2tdi as not an option....(a dash through the box) meaning that you could get a bench but there would only be two seat belts?

Just in case you were thinking of buying a car then retrofitting a bench seat, it's not a viable conversion. The bodyshell appears to have different fixings which are incorporated at the production stage. These are not bolt-on bits nor are they available as service parts.

Yes I see but according to post #8 of this thread, it appears that a cross member may be switched by being bolted or welded on.

I remember mention that there was a german forum/thread that had thoroughly investigated this, anyone have a link? I guess the real way to find out would be to drop the fuel tank wouldn't it?

What about the prospect of adding the hardware above the pan so the seat would sit overall about an inch higher than normal and the rear latches wouldn't go into the pan but into brackets?

For those curious, I have determined that the 3L did not come with the three person bench seat like all other a2's (Do to my extensive cross country used a2 3l searching and by the dealer price list from 2003) BUT it did come with a 2 person bench seat (as seen in attached pictures) in addition for the 50/50 split seat, so it should be reletively straight forward to just switch it with a 3 person seat from any other non 3l a2 if you buy one with the 2 person bench.

When you look at the picture, you will notice that the mounts are placed exactly like the 3 seat bench in other a2's.

The disadvantage of course will be the special weight reduction that have beenundergone in the seats will be discarded since the bench seat will be a normal factory a2 one (which is why they only did a 2 person bench instead of 3, lighter)...but hey, 32.9 km/l instead of 33.3 doesn't matter that much to me :p

This gives hope for us 3l buyers that there is a solution for us to have a 5 seater, woohoo!!
