Bespoke A2 Footrest Group Order

I wasn’t suggesting that you remove it as an option altogether because it could well be what others want to do. But could it be an option that each person could decide for their order. Some people may already have some of their preferred tape already.
as I say, just a suggestion.

Understood Steve,

Makes sense to me. I’ll update the post to state it’s not mandatory as an option and that it can be removed.

Kind regards,

Tom

Regarding the 3M tape, I'm concerned what will happen to the bits that end up under the cutouts - I think they'll very quickly attract dust & dirt which, on a very sticky surface, won't be removable. For that reason I'd be inclined to cut (many) small widthways strips instead, to be applied between the cutouts where there's definitely metal all the way along them. A larger width (50mm?) might do better in this respect. I also think it best for the Shop to purchase the remainder of the 3M tape so that I can apply the same mountings to it at the point of orders being received. Also, I can receive my own footrest in with the batch of un-ordered ones that will be going into the Shop. I'll contribute to the club's costs in respect of the VHB and the P&P for that delivery.

Morning Ian,

I have not managed to find any Genuine 3M double sided tape wider than what is shown above. If you or anyone else has a link to 50mm wide, which is as good as the product above then please do share it and I will adjust the pricing.

Stated earlier in the thread I mention the need for everyone to cut the TT Style groove shapes out of the supplied tape. This will save me doing it 114 times after mine. Additionally it will be quite time consuming and I’ve already put so much of my personal time into this project. Your idea of trimming the tape into thin strips is also a great idea which might be easier.

More than happy for (other) Ian to collect the remaining footrests along with packaging materials ready for you distribute from the shop.

Thank you so much for your support throughout this Ian. Quite excited about having one of these fitted into Project OEM in the next few weeks.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks for your research on the tape Tom, and sorry I must have missed the bit about the cutouts earlier on. I'll still have a look just in case, but two thin strips of 25mm between each cutout, with a gap between them, would probably work better than 1 of 50mm anyway. I'll happily fit the remaining ones to be sold by the Shop with whatever tape solution gets adopted.

Regarding the VHB, I'm looking at a 6mm wide 33m roll option of the same 5952 tape at Amazon for £46.55, Viking Tapes also have these at a similar price once VAT is included.

Tom @2work, do you have a measurement of the distance from the edge of the footrest to the end of the cutouts? If we could use two 6mm strips cut to length down the long edges, would this not be sufficient to hold the footrest down? It would certainly be the easiest option to apply to a big batch for postage, and would also allow full drainage of any water coming off the sole of the driver's shoe, down towards the carpet/mat as normal.

Two rolls would definitely cover all 93 units. At their current price on Amazon that works out at almost exactly £1 per unit, although by my maths you'd actually get 50-55 units from a roll. If you wanted to divide it up more precisely, the Shop could purchase the unused part roll for use against a future small replenishment order.

Morning Ian,

Thank you for your thoughts on this subject.

Your drainage point is totally valid and not fully considered by myself as I intend to find a solution with 2mm rubber to fill this TT Style slots. Maybe from an old road bike tyre as it’s getting close to putting my winters wheels on. This is just for myself though and not something I’ll be offering as an addition to the footrest.

I truly believe that a 6mm strip each side for £1.00 is not adequate to fully adhere the footrest. What I propose it 2x strips of 25mm wide tape to give fully contact as the footrests are 51mm wide. This is for £1.75 per footrest.

This is just an option to save members having to mark their original footrest and can be deselected as an option by anyone.

If anyone is wanting to hold their new footrest in place by screws, bolts or rivets then they will not pay the extra £1.75 per footrest.

Kind regards,

Tom

Afternoon everybody,

I am happy to report that I am now in the possession of the CAD file that Cut-Tec require to produce our footrests out of 2mm Marine Grade Brushed Stainless Steel.

We are going forward with the design option as per the picture below:

There are only 15 remaining within this Group Order which will surely be spoken for by the time I submit the order.

Soon I will start sending PMs to those of you who have registered your interest to finalise the payment and postal address details.

The order will be sent to Cutting Technologies, if all funds have been received, on Thursday 1 October.

By the middle of October your new Bespoke Footrest will be fitted into your Aluminium Friend(s).

Kind regards,

Tom

PS How about a handbrake knob re manufacture?

Hi Simon
I have looked into the remanufacture of the handbrake button from aluminium billet. It’s a very complex part to manufacture from solid ally billet. Equally the original was an injection moulded item which would be thousands of pounds to replicate the tooling to make these and then the process used to ‘skin’ the plastic button is equally expensive to make the tooling
Every credit to Audi engineers when making the A2 its fair to say that no accountant was ever consulted and hence we have an extremely well engineered vehicle almost devoid of cost considerations in its conception and execution. One of the reasons Audi lost so much money on every A2 made

The beat I have been able to do is used additive manufacturing to 3D print the button. This provides a plastic button but I’m unable to clear it in a nice skin of aluminium

Cheers. Paul

Great work by the way.

I will now have to find a way to upgrade my Accelerator side foot rest!
How many people have removed the ‘add on bulge’ to the right of the accelerator And put in their own foot rest?A30985BF-00CA-4011-B232-8504557A5FAE.jpeg
