Hi all what’s the best way to clean the lower intake manifold on the 1.6 FSI

I have a replacement manifold here but as usual it’s caked up in carbon so I was wondering what’s the best way to clean it ?

What is the best cleaner out there for the job ?

Last time I used some intake cleaner but it didn’t seem to do anything ???

Would it be easier to clean if I removed the flaps if so how do you take the flaps out ?

Thanks :)

HI.
Having cleaned one myself i used diesel on a mico fibre cloth/rag, very time consuming as i have no garage.
But in hindsight i would have placed the intake manifold in a tray full of diesel and leave to soak overnight. Wouldn't use any nasty chemicals, as they might erode the bushes on the flap shaft. Would also use some plastic scotch brite first(before soaking) to get off any stubborn deposits, then use a very fine wet/dry to polish the insides of manifold (after soaking). Lots of different ways to clean this depends on how much time you have and whether inside or outside.
Good luck
Steve

Louis may be worth putting in a tray and use Mr. Muscle! I know lads on Briskoda forum have used same to clean Cat Converters.

HI.
I thought about using Mr muscle or a similar product to clean mine but was unsure of what material is used for the bushes on the shaft for the intake manifold flaps.
As these are prone to wear thought best to use something that wouldn't soften or damage the bushes in any way. In other words a non penetrative oil (wd40, 3 in 1, GT85 etc are penetrating oil types).

I know one member used oven cleaner like Mr. Muscle but having a can of Mr. Muscle at hand I read the can label. The 'do not use on' list of materials is chrome, aluminium, zinc, copper, plastic or polished/lacquered surfaces. The intake manifold is aluminium! Read somewhere the shaft is plastic! Steve above also has a point about the shaft bushes; does any body know what they are made of?

What did you use buddy to polish the surface where the gaskets sit ?

Hi.
Scraped off old gasket gently, with a Stanley knife blade, then used plastic scotch brite to remove stubborn old gasket.
Thanks Steve

Sorry to be a pain but have you got a link to the plastic scotch brite ?
