Bio Diesel - can I use it?

There's a place near me that sells Bio-Diesel in 50 ltr drums, think it was about £1.00 per litre last time I looked.

I've noticed the taxi driver up the road filling his Octavia 1.9 Sdi with it, I'm considering trying it myself in my 1.4tdi.

As I know pretty much nothing about this I thought I'd ask if anyone has any info on this?

Thanks ;)

I believe that the PD tdi engines can take upto a 30% blend of bio diesel, anymore than that and it starts to cause problems for the injection system so check what blend they are selling.

Tourangang used to make his own biodiesel and I think he ran it in his TDi pretty successfully.

The simpler the engine the better it is at handling biofuel. The original 1.9s (pre-PD) could handle the strongest blends.

Not tried it in my car but things to watch with bio diesel - especially the chip fat variety are
. quality
. it does not store well and prone to bacterial growth over time ( a gunge like frog spawn)
. fuel filters block more quickly, particularly after the change over from std diesel. As a guide, filter life is roughly halved

Cheers Spike

Audi say "NO!" but I've seen some changes made (try googling PÖL on the German forum). However, it's a lot more aggressive on rubber than traditional fuel, so there are frequently fuel pump and gasket problems.

Your call.

The A2 handbook states that you need the PR code 2G0 which means you have an A2 adapted to RME. My service book doesn't show this code but they are not always correct. One of our Lupo 3L's supposedly has 17" wheels to which 14" tyres can be fitted! According to the Lupo handbook any diesel can use RME. My A2 1.2 and Lupo 3L have exactly the same engine!

You should only buy RME from a reputable source made to the required standard.

Thanks for all the information, very helpfull.

Further investigation has put me off buying from the place I'd mentioned due to poor quality, a number of taxis running it have had some major problems.
Shopping around has led me to a company called Argent Energy who's products are all manufactured to EU standards, most of the Stagecoach fleet is running their fuels now. However it's not much of a cost saving as the minimum sale is 1000 litres and comes in at £1.42 per litre. That price is if I supply my own 1000 litre IBC and also supply the transport - not really worth it so it's back to the drawing board...........

This is what i do for a living . i deliver fresh cooking oil and pick up the waste oil. i pick up 2600 litres a day. dirty job but someone has to do it .
