bought some bio diesel and started or wth 5 litres added when filling up, then went to 10 litres when filling up.
car runs great except for hot starts, turn of car and if i try to start it after a couple of minutes it turns over like lack of fuel then slowly picks up and goes after a lot of cranking !!!!
also had this on a 130pd passat about 6-7 years ago with bio diesel from another source !! any ideas or just don't bother with it

Hi

Biodiesel doesn't seem to like low temperatures and so there are additives that help in cold weather.

Could it just be the cold?

Have you tried cycling the glow plugs?

i.e.Turn on the ignition and wait until the glow plug light goes out, then immediately switch it off without starting it and do it again. Repeat bit a third time, that gets a bit of heat in there and should help!

Changing to bio diesel is renowned for clogging up fuel filters until all the 'mixed' fuel has been purged from the system. I think it's recommended to replace the filter twice, possibly after the first week then again after 2 or 3 weeks.

Its been warm last few days and it has been winter treated. not the fuel filter as its been done recently and fine when starting cold and performance if anything is better with the bio added,
only happens with a warm engine with short stops (a few minutes up to about 30 mins) then fine !!!

If it is only when warm that you have a problem then perhaps it si worth checking / replacing the temperature sender.

That might be thinking that the engine is cold and so overfueling it ?

They are a common failure and so often worth replacing even if you can't manage to check it.

I remember this being massive a few years ago over in Germany and there were lots of discussions. The short version was a probable shorter fuel pump life and the potential aggressiveness towards other materials meant that the consensus was a "hell no!", because goodwill still weighed on the equation and no-one wanted to jeopardise that. I'm aware of two who had used it in the past, and a couple of other non-standard conversions (E85 being one and I'm sure the other was PÖL / biodiesel); the latter racked up an awful lot of kms - with the car being in a major accident a few years back - and the E85 conversion has already killed two fuel pumps.

Right now, with the age of the materials involved, there's no way I'd start to play. I also don't see any massive cost / use benefit at the moment...

I tried this stuff once and never again. Loss of power like i was running out of fuel, i had to wait for the engine to cool down beofre starting again. Cleaned everything out replaced fuel filter works fine now but when i change the fuel filter now, when i first start it up it doesn't like to run on idle i have to give it a quick run round the block and it's fine but it will just cut out then take ages to fire back up if i don't run it round the block. and this is 4 years on from when i used it on 1 tank.

Engine needs to be set up properly torun Bio diesel, SVO or refined WVO. Best bet is to fit an Elsbett PD kit. This is very common in Denmark and Germany. UK still allows up to 5000 litres to be made tax free for road use. WOM have a 1.2 TDI with Elsbett kit fitted.
