After another attempted journey to work this morning I can confirm that Black Beauty is indeed dead. 4 breakdowns in a 8 mile journey and the accelerator has to be kept to the floor to keep the revs high enough to pull away, all coupled with a nice smell of burning metal. RIP black beauty.

Really sorry to hear this Steve, you put a lot of work and expense into that project and broke new ground.
Any thoughts on trying again with a better/lower mileage engine?
If not, you have all the skills to get all the re-usable bits re-used ?

Hi Steve,

Very sorry to hear that it really is dead, such a shame as this gave FSI and Potential FSI owners something to work towards.

The exterior and interior are great still though so what are you plans, surely this isn’t going to be taken apart? There has to be an ‘economical’ solution for fitment of anther engine, maybe without a turbo this time!

I really am gutted for you mate as this, in my eyes, has been your best looking A2 build so far, biased maybe, but you know I’m partial to a Black Audi.

Keep safe and just get another engine.

Kind regards,

Tom

Sorry to hear that the engine has blown Steve. Gutted! This is a beautiful car and clearly able to chop the competition.

Hopefully you keep it for some transplant surgery to get it back on the road.

Or maybe an electric conversion...?

Thanks for your comments guys, I think the problem came from trying forced induction with a high compression engine. It was a gamble from the start but I thought it MAY just have worked.

I won't be putting an engine into this one, i find the standard FSI to be too slow so would only want a turbo'd one and that would very likely end up in the same position. In my view, I did save this car, the other person trying to buy it at the time was a facebook breaker, I just pushed it too far.

I think the most likely path will be a black TDI 90 and swap the bits over. Not all will be swapped though, some will be put up for sale as I never like to build the same car twice.

Well the Dune2 should have its front shocks fitted today so will be raised all around, that will then become my daily until I figure out what's happening.

It was a lot of hard work and effort, not to mention the cost to have only lasted about 600 miles....damn it.

Onward and upward

Got a decent fsi engine here if you wanted to revert it back to standard pal...??

I don't find my FSI slow, quite nippy and entertaining (in a good way).
I did find BB's journey interesting, and it got me interested in how turbos and BOVs work.
The 1.8T, as in my Mk1 TT, is a fine example of what turbos can do with 250 - 300 bhp not that hard to get, but not cheap either. An engine built for the job. I'm sure the FSI was never intended to be tuned, other than for economy and low emissions.
Still, @A2Steve enjoys what he does (as do we), there's nothing that beats that, long may he continue.
Mac.

Interesting calling the FSI slow as it’s the fastest model in the range. I appreciated that a TDI 90 will have faster in-gear times with more torque however part of the joy of the FSI is stirring the box and when you do so, the TDI’s can’t keep up.

@A2Steve you’ve been corrupted by POWER! Should we call to A2clarkson?? ??

As Steve has proved the FSI can't be improved, but Tdi 90 has a lot of options to get more power and a lot more torque and is a stronger engine the weakest link is the clutch

The DMF maybe, but I honestly don’t think they are that bad

After thinking on my options for the last couple of days with a heavy heart I’ve decided that I don’t want to put even more money and time into this project and so I will be parting out the car instead.

With its 9 previous owners, 130k miles and partial service history I feel it’s got to the stage where it doesn’t warrant the cost involved of replacing the complete engine. I don’t have the time or space to do the work myself and so it would need to go into a garage with the subsequent costs that come with that.

It does mean that there will be a lot of very desirable parts being listed in the marketplace soon.

This is a real shame Steve,

I really was hoping that this would work out for you so other (including me) would know what was possible with the FSI. The FSI I had a few years ago was only in my possession for a few months and did like it compared to the 1.4 BBY I was running at the same time. It had no EML issues and was a complete joy to drive after is rectified a few issues.

Should Black Beauty’s Coilovers come up for sale I will be very interested to have them fitted to OEM sir. I’ll keep checking the market place.

Kind regards,

Tom
