I’ve just taken in a 1.6FSi with an oil pressure warning light and a few other faults. I bought it as a fixer upper/breaker depending on what the faults turned out to be.

Well upon taking the bonnet off, it became quite obvious what the oil pressure warning light was, the wire connected to the sensor was broken. That was a quick 2 minute fix...result.

Having a look around, it needs the following work, nothing major, a new expansion bottle, coil packs, coolant temperature sensor plus a couple of pipes that are a bit bodged. All stuff I have on the shelf so a couple of hours work and it should be back a lot healthier ?

This leaves me in a conundrum, it’s too good to be a breaker so that’s out of the window, and it’s difficult/awkward to sell a car at the moment with Covid lockdown.

I’ve given it a wash and it’s come out quite tidy, it’s also quite well specced with platinum leather, rear PDC, cruise, 12v luggage socket and a nice rear cupholder.

So, what to do with it? Itgot me thinking back to the A2 Dune I built last year.

Here’s some photos as a reminder

I think I could get the car raised front and back, arches all painted, faults fixed and the skid plates/ roof bars added with perhaps some chunkier tyres and wheel spacers for just over the £500 budget.

So, what do you think? Please cast your vote above. If there’s a resounding yes, I’ll build it.

Update : 24.5.2020 - I’ve decided to go for a different look, votex kit, coilovers and a set of 18 inch alloys.

Plans got a bit out of hand ?

Did you sell the other one?

I think the most successful Allroad / Dunes show off the arches with a strong contrast. E.g. just love an A4 AR in silver over black.

I liked the Dune a lot, that was a great project, but I say keep this one stock: it's a nice spec and looks well and owes peanuts at the moment. I like it as it is. Or: sport it? Bit of a drop, some 17's. Yum.

If it's not a keeper, it'd make someone a lovely car for a little under £1K when things start to move again.

I've not ticked any box because you need one that says 'I like it just as it is thanks' ?

Rusty 911 is right. Keep it as is and sell it on in a few weeks (and can I say it..make a profit!). 1.6FSi seem to be getting a better press recently, so the alternative might be to build a car to a customers spec, i.e. pre sell it. Good luck Steve.

I'm mostly with Rusty - I reckon slightly Sport-ing it. 17's and a subtle lowering. But still make it unique.

then how about a 'reverse Storm' effect with silver arches and door trims / bumper inserts, leaving the sills and grille etc. in black? Would go very well with the Platinum interior.

I see your point completely, not enough contrast between anthracite grey and the brilliant black bodywork.

I think Audi pulled it off the silver and black well on the pickup, but it would be a bold move to do on your own car. It may be the only option against black though because grey may not be enough contrast. ?

No EML light?

Have you tried punting it onto the market at a grand as-is?

No EML present at the moment but I’ll be reinstating that and sorting the issue if it has an illuminated one.

I could just advertise it as-is, but I like a car to be right before selling. I also have a terrible addiction and desire to make A2’s that look a bit different.

Responding well to a quick machine polish this morning.

Although the votes are pointing to Dune 2, I haven’t clicked the button yet to buy the bits ?

Sell rear cup holders separately and possibly swap the leather interior with nice original cloth and sell that too if the condition is good enough and it's worthwhile?

Loads of profit ??

Interesting that pickup!
Just let down by the wheels imo which don't suit what they've done to it, they look too delicate and need to be chunkier, possibly smaller too, 16"?

The fact it's coming up so well makes me firm up on my initial thoughts: keep original or perhaps Sport it (externally).

Nice modern colour, nice interior. I still like it as is. What's the story on it: history, miles, owners, hpi etc?

Got a set of 17's down the back of the sofa?

It’s part service history, about 6 stamps I think, quite a bit of paperwork, Timing belt done 10k miles ago.

I’m waiting on the logbook to know owners and haven’t hpi’d it.

I’ve got a set of 17s on the breaker that’s arriving next week, but they are Skoda octavia spiders and in bronze.

Leave it alone Steve, it looks a nice car for someone, fix a few bits that need fixing, and keep it all original! It's car like this that will be appreciating classics going forward as apposed to ones that look very different to the original build sticker. All for adding OEM to an original car but subtly. The addition of sports wheels will make it look nice but i'm not sure that will be important to a eventual new buyer. Just my 2 penneth worth.

I’m all for oem with the right car. My dolphin grey FSI has just over 50k and will be kept original and clean.

This black one has 125k so will never be a show piece, hence it gave me a bit of room to play.

I think the resounding message is to keep it standard though so ‘Dune 2’ may have to wait for a cheap TDI, I’ve got others on the horizon.

Yes and this 50k car will be very collectable in the future if mileage kept lowish.

Oil changes and fuel used are the most important things on higher mileage fsi engines. Even this new car to you if well maintained, will be very desirable in the future as values climb.

I've seen it many times over the years. As an example, mint Ur Quattros were only worth £7k 12 years ago. Same car today would be £40K. Even complete dogs are worth £8k and selling today. So it correlates that any desirable car has a top and bottom price and there's no way this new fsi to you would be anyway near the bottom and if kept right somewhere in the middle at least if not higher. Plus this car has been used and kept someone happy and will continue to do the same if sold to an enthusiast.
