Black, Satin and Sabre?

What is the difference between the different blacks?

Which black is right if the interior code is N0G / YA, or will any do?

N0G/YA = 'Soul' interior with standard seats in 'Sinus' pattern cloth. The N0G bit is the seats. The YA bit is the interior colour scheme, 'Soul'.

Rather than just one colour, the named colour scheme (Soul) is actually a set of colours for different elements of the interior such as soft fabrics, carpets, dashboard, other plastics. Soul can be described as 'everything is black, except the roof lining & A/D pillar trims, which are light grey'. This is probably the most common A2 interior and the hence easiest to buy replacement items for. The same light grey roofline and black dashboard, steering wheel & shrouds, gear lever & handbrake grip were used in most of the colour schemes.

Normally you'll see A2 coloured items advertised as being e.g. Soul Black. The exception might be switchgear, which was all black irrespective of the interior colour scheme. The switchgear was originally hard-touch from the beginning of production, which if you look at the sticker on the back of an early climate unit, is actually called Satinschwarz i.e. Satin Black. From the 2002 model year (effectively '51 plate) it changed to soft-touch paint, the same as the rest of the interior plastics. Soft-touch climate units say 'Soul' on the sticker on the back.

A bugbear of all A2 owners, soft-touch paint wears horribly, leaving the white plastic underneath showing through in patches on switchgear. Wear can also be seen on high-contact panels such as the window switch surround, but here the plastic underneath is the same colour.
