Blue smoke/lumpy idle on cold startup

My fathers 2001 A2 1.4 TDI (75bhp) is particularly smoky on cold startup would say mainly blue smoke but does clear fairly quickly, tried a replacement injector wiring loom but still encountering issues, anyone else encountered similar problem and get to the bottom of it?

Does it use any oil?
Sounds CB like it’s burning oil hence the blue smoke
Check the dipstick is not broken and hence engine has been over filled

Glowplug failure? What does the smoke smell of. Oil then as Paul, diesel then glowplug or overfuelling.

Glowplug failure would normally be a white/grey smoke due to the amount of fuel in the pistons when it eventually fires up.
Blue smoke is burning oil, it is possible it could be turbo seals. check the air intake and intercooler for oil build up.
plus as depronman said, check the oil level to ensure not overfilled.

Have a look at the back of the engine where turbo is fitted; you can look from below or right wheelhouse after wheel is removed. My 50 cents that turbo is oily, and turbo is leaking oil into the intake.

Alternatively leaking through the valve stems while stationary.

Does it consume oil?

One of mine has this too. Marcus @ WOM mentioned injector seals, if I understand what he meant then the injector(s) on the misfiring cylinder(s) could be leaking back too much into the fuel return to get the right mixture in to ignite from stone cold. This would make sense with mine, it's much less evident on warm dry days.
