Bmw bobber late life crisis

Bmw r100 rt found the next project ..not sure on this one ? View attachment 8921538 years old 1 previous owner and yes 2,700 miles from new ? ..there a fair bit of light rust coming round frame ..but engine sweet should be as not yet run in ..it was recommissioned back in 2008 mot and back into store until last year again fluids changed new mot tyres but no miles acquired it today ..home in the garage it’s a real dilemma to restore as it is or mod it into something else..hard to believe the bike behind started out the same only 5 years older ..did that over first lock down ..
Wow! You don't see many RTs around these days, let alone in that condition. Nice year as well, with the Brembo brakes and handlebar choke. Back in the day, there were people who would smoke a cigarette or cigar while cruising along behind that screen!

I must admit I put it on one of the airhead forums ...lots of people don’t want it altered into cafe racer I can see their point as before long there won’t be many original ones left as they’re all being altered.. I think I’ve come up with a compromise..Strip and rebuild yes taking off the front fairing but just doing the S front-end altering bars re positioning indicators to the stalk bmw type ..I might even put a siebenrock cockpit fairing on Her ..she will still look stock ..as pic shows

Enjoy! They are so easy to work on and you can do it all with the full toolkit from under the seat!! The worst job I had on my R45 was replacing the gearbox pawl spring (which I had to do twice). The whole back of the bike had to be dismantled to get the gearbox off and then the end cover had to be heated up to get it off - all to change a £2 spring.

Hi gills yes I have heard of that one it’s probably worst job on bike ...it’s why I like working on these old bmw I did the bobber a couple of years ago .. I’m thinking of treating myself to a motorcycle lift so much easier now I’m a pensioner ? ....and there are tons of great videos of anything you need to know although I have the clymer manual It’s literally a Bible...there are a couple of specialist tools needed but with the lathe and mill not much I can’t make up ..cheers Paul

I think they look fantastic - I always fancied one. You'll have to get a second lift to hold the Clymer up though, they weight a ton!!

Enjoy your project (I'm sure you will!); you're making me rather envious!

Morning Paul,

These lifts are brilliant, they really are. I used to have the manual hydraulic version and it was spot on. So much easier for maintenance tasks. Showing off your awesome machines is making we want to look for a another MV F4 winter bargain.

Enjoy the new toy when it arrives Sir.

Kind regards,

Tom

Looks immaculate lovely colour ...my lift arrived today and bike loaded on it already removed the old rt fairing .. it’s just a joy to be able to lift the bike up to the working height you need instead of scrambling around on a concrete floor total luxury..?? ..now for the fun and stripping it right down everything will be either vapour blasted (aluminium) or bead blasted and painted..I’m keeping the paint colour but tank has some marks so that will be redone ..
Going to fit the siebenrock bikini fairing as I like that style ..as in the S model ..so it will have a look of this below nice dash layout using rt existing gauges ..

Frame good I’m going to leave motor in and dress out the rear bit of surface rust of frame neutralise and mask off and spray paint 86 satin black epoxy ..I’ve Got to make a fixture now to compress the spring in the swing arm so I can take the driveshaft out ..bearings out blast and paint good pile of bits to go off now ..lots of nice little projects now to tackle each week ..I think il order up kit and rebuild the Brembo,s next ..

That photo reminds me of how easy valve adjustment was!
Yes new technology it’s not necessarily better ..older I get I’m liking the older engineering ? you couldn’t do this on a Ducati I know I’ve had 3 of them..?..

Morning all update on the bmw r100rt conversion to S ...I set up the freshly painted frame yesterday had a mate come round at 10:30 in the morning to give me a hand to lift the engine back in the frame 11hours later No lunch one drink ..got carried away ? it’s looking once again like a bike ... Obviously lots to do but thrilled the way it’s going I was going to paint a different colour as I’ve booked the painter end of May ( he’s booking in work 9 months in advance now ? .. But I think keeping it original as they only did that colour in 1983 I put the front mudguard on just to see what it look like and it goes really well with the gold wheels these were vapour blasted 2 pack epoxy primer base coat and 2 k lacquer . .. The panels will still need painting as there are scuffs on the tank back panel and side panels along with the new bikini fairing ..there is a mix of vapour blasting alloy ..powder coating ..cerakoting the latter is real tough Finnish .a fresh new set if continental classic attack sticky tyres ..I acquired a couple of nice Cnc front fork badges I then sent off for gold hard anodising ..
