Boot light pulsing

I've just replaced the missing boot light in my A2 and discovered why it was missing.

All the time, it does this:

On at half brightness for a few seconds, then full brightness followed by controlled fade to off (same reate as the interior lights), then it starts again. It's the same whether the boot's open or shut, or the car's locked or unlocked.

Any ideas?

As it is controlled by the infamous central (in)convenience control unit, the chances are that there is a fault with it!

Check all connections are sound and replug if necessary.

Was rather hoping it wouldn't be that. It's under the passenger footwell yes?

Yes that's where it lies, lurking in the dark, waiting to break when you're not looking
