I found the part number for the B6 Passat Stabilus is 6539NS which are available from UK sellers on the ever popular auction site.

These seem like a pretty common part for all the saloon and hatchback VWs from 2000-05

The sellers does ship to the UK.

Just received a set of Febi struts for a Passat Estate and these lift the boot up very nicely with no thunk at the end. In fact they appear to be a rebadged version of the stabilus parts in post 106 that @[email protected] suggested as they have the same silver tube and markings as the ones in that ebay listing.

They are Febi 23388 and seem to be fairly available from UK sellers currently which is easier at the moment with all the new faff at customs for items coming in from the EU.

Afternoon Bob,

Please do tell me more.

I’ve seen mention of these spring assisted struts on here before. I think someone was hoping to have the tailgate open on the fob button. Not sure if the OP was put off by the potential broken jaw or damage to the hinges as it may rise too fast.

So does the springs actually have the strength to open the boot on the button far enough for the struts to take over and have it fully opened. It would be really handy whilst approaching the car with the shopping trolley! I know it’s not difficult to open the tailgate but having an ‘auto opening function’ would be interesting.

Kind regards,

Tom

Tried to post a video but unsuccessful.
Yes, opening works off the centre remote button.
Pair of Febi struts, unscrewed the ros end, slid on a spring, and also a stainless M8 washer. Jobs a good 'un!
Will dig out details of parts involved.

Parts required, all on fleabay...
2 x Febi Gas Spring - 23380
2 x Heavy Load Duty Compression Die Spring, RED 8mm bore x 16mm Outside Diameter & 45mm Long
2 x M8 Stainless Washers.

The Washers may not be essential for operation but give a smooth face against the plastic end pivot, rather than a bare spring face.

There is enough oomph to lift the tailgate, and damping as it approached the max opening position. Door is a bit heavier to close, but not crazy.
