Very nice find Jellybean,

Could you share the link to fleabay. All I'm getting are the china items and those take too long to get here.
Appreciate the service.

Kind regards
Duncan

Afternoon Duncan,

Bob sent me the bay link earlier, here you go:

2x Springs from this link. Remember read Bobs earlier post as this is a multiple option purchase link (drop downs for size and colour etcetera).
2x Febi 23380 boot struts, there are plenty of sellers on eBay and elsewhere for these.
2x M8 washers.

Ordered all these boys earlier as I have been wandering about these for a few years now.

Kind regards,

Tom

First time I saw this was about 3 years ago done on an Audi A3.
Hello John,

Did you mention it on here as I do remember a discussion about it but couldn't find it (did look too hard though). I was going to go for this as an option when it was brought up before, maybe your thread about 3 years ago? The only thing that stopped me was someone said it might damage the hinges and possibly cause injury. What Bobs got there does seem to have good dampening towards the top. If its is a bit too aggressive on the initial opening it should be fine for me. I and I alone use OEM now. The wife and kids have got 250 to get dirty.

If I get a broken jaw Ive only got myself to blame!

Kind regards,

Tom

I have never mentioned it before on here or anywhere, I just seem to remember seeing it on YouTube while looking for something else

The replacement struts have to be a certain diameter for the springs, the OEM springs are too wide and a spring that will fit over the OEM springs will catch, or so I have read.

Can anyone give me the under diameter of the springs? I’ll measure my struts with the vernier

David,

I understand them to be M8 / 8mm.

Here is the items I purchased earlier which is as per Bobs description:

Amazing thank you both - also Tom I’m slightly embarrassed that I didn’t pick up M8 meaning 8mm internal diameter 🤦‍♂️

This looks to be a genuinely useful upgrade for those times when you’re carrying a handful of bags in the rain etc. - and I’ll be in there replacing the struts shortly anyway!

Ian, I don't doubt that your struts will open the boot, but do they have damping as they approach full extension to avoid hinge damage?

Hello,

I looked for these FEBI BILSTEIN 23380 on eBay. I have found them but when checking compatibility
the eBay says " This item doesn't fit Audi A2 2004 Petrol Hatchback 1.6 FSI FWD -- 8Z0 1598cc 81KW 110HP BAD."

I assume it is impossible because hardly the struts are made differently for a diesel and for a petrol A2s.
Yet, still would like to check with you.

Thanks!

Hi, you are correct that these are not listed for A2's. The force rating is higher than A2 struts, intended for steel doors. Hence the red spring just pings the door, and the force of the rams lift it.
Its important that the rams are damped towards their full extension, to avoid the door flying up and damaging the hinges.

This looks like a great upgrade .
How did you get the ros ends off?
Grip the rod with pipe grips, then the plastic end with pliers and just unscrew. They are on pretty tight!
Take care not to damage the ball housing.

I fitted the springs today. Didn't use the 8mm rings as it resulted in a trunk that would not close. Without the spacers all went smooth. Though there is a little worry about the strain on the joints. Well time will tell.

Cheers
Duncan
