Well thus far i have realy enjoyed my x ref bargain basement 87k A2..

Had the cam belt service done.. (600 quid ish.. but i new about its cost)..

Then 2 months later, loses power and clunk bang and good bye 12 valves, a water pump and all the lifters... 725 quid later shes sweet...

Next stop MOT..

Advice realy, best cheap tyres?...

Alsoi have a twanging noise from the front when going lock to lock, any ideas is this mot relasted..?

oh yeah, and the rough price of a starter motor, the whirring noise on start up is killing me...

apart from that im loving it... even thinking about a 1.4 tdi next....

Oh dear - doesn't sound good.....

As far as the tyres go I can heartily recommend the ones I got 12K ago:

Falken Ziex - I have the big ones (205/45/17) but they still only cost £300 for the set (fitted/balanced etc). Excellent wet weather performance and longevity. Smaller size wheels should be cheaper. Got mine from Watlings in Redhill.

Hi markjames
There has been a lot of discussion about cambelt replacement recently so I would be interested in what happened to your car - was it replaced by an Audi dealer, if not was a genuine Audi cambelt used, what caused the failure after 2 months, it sounds like you had to pay for the repair - was there no comeback on the garage ?

Now back to your questions. mytires.co.uk usually list some very reasonable tyres (add £10 per corner for fitting) and their web site includes tyre test info so you can compare performance of different brands.
The twanging noise could be a broken spring or possibly the top strut bearings. Club members have reported both these faults a couple of times.
The starter sounds like the pinion mechanism might just need a good clean. Check this out before buying a replacement.

Cheers Spike

Thanks guys, the cam belt failure was caused by the bearings failing on the water pump, it did run ok when i turned it off but then the RAC man came and turned it over several times and it died during this..

Not sure what to think realy, having spoke to a few people about it 2 things have been said: 1: The rac shouldnt have turned it over knowing it was the waterpump and it was connected to the cambet and 2: the garage should have spotted the pump failure during the main service... oh and hes not a main dealer but a well trusted vw audi specialist ive used for years...

Who knows...

It's well known that the water pump should always be replaced at the same time as the cambelt. The new cambelt will put stress on the old water pump (which had settled itself to the old cambelt) and the old water pump will break, taking the new cambelt and a few odds and ends with it...

Thanks Tigas for informing about why the water pump should be replaced together with the cambelt. It was news to me.

Ive got twanging noise too. been through an mot no problem. car has done 168k though.audi tell me its strut top but not mot issue

When I was recently quoted by the local Audi stealer I asked about the waterpump. They told me they now have fixed charges set down by Audi and that the cambelt change is just that, they don't now change the water pump and other belts. Seemed odd to me so I went to a local Audi specialist.
They changed the other belts and the pullies, but left the water pump. As the cars only done 17K miles they said it would be ok.

Yes, at 17K miles you should be OK with the old water pump. Prepare to change everything again at 50K or 60K miles, though.
