On another forum I've been reading an interesting thread on brake disc skimming. Here's a video if you've not seen it done before. I never realised it was so quick and easy.

It certainly has green credentials of reusing, in keeping with the A2 ethos.

Though the cost of skimming vs the cost of replacement is a balance, especially for the DIY mechanic.

This is all well and good ...... as long as the offending discs have enough left on them to allow machining ?????

IMHO....... not worth the cost when compared to new discs in most cases !!!

My 2 penneth worth as a skilled center lathe turner.

SPECKS

Don't......................

Why do you say that?

I think it's more applicable to performance cars where discs are £££.

I gather the recommended costs for skimming is £10-20 per disc. Some OEMs do charge more though. It should help pads to last a bit longer also.

I wouldn't bother....discs are cheap enough for these cars that the price differential makes sense to just replace them if needed.

The more i think about this process...... the more it bothers me !!!
Its quite big in the states to machine discs, as i remember 10 years ago visiting our service center in Dalton and the works truck had them done !!!

But, doing it on an A2...... WTF ????

New discs on order for mine !!!! NO BRAINER ;)
