Brake lights operate with no ignition

Hi all, I noticed brake light switch was failing, bought a new one from the dealer today. I plugged it in with the ignition off and the brake lights came on. Keys are not in the ignition. They work fine with the switch but I’m confused as to why they work with no ignition power? To be clear, I’m this image the brake pedal is depressed. Lifting the pedal means the lights go out. I tried the old intermittent switch and it’s the same. Any clues, my only thought is as it’s Swedish sold, the lights are adjusted so they run in the daytime from the o position.

Thanks for the swift response - meant I took it home to try out the brake refurbishment and full service - all good
