Brake Servo intermittent failure

Hello all you good people.
Martin's new A2 seems to have an intermittent failure on the servo. When the car is parked up overnight the brakes seem to work fine but if you stop and nip to the shops and gone for 5-25 mins the servo will not work, we've not been in a position where the car is left for 1-2 hours to see how it behaves.
Any ideas please

This must be a lack, or loss of vacuum to the servo. Is your shopping trip local, ie a 5 minute drive?
Wondering if it's not so much how long you park, more how long the engine has been running before parking. If so, the vacuum is slow to build.
Not knowing which engine you have, don't know the vacuum source. (manifold or pump).
Mac.

Hi Mac
It's a 1.4tdi 75. I went out yesterday in it approximately 25 minute drive, the car was left for 3 hours, no problem when I returned to the car. Martin took me to collect my car approximately 20 minutes drive, car left for 5 minutes and the problem occurred. Similar happened last week too.

Afternoon Mandy,

Should you require a replacement Brake Servo then I have one here which I can send you. It actually belongs to @Sarge. He sent it to me a while ago for my 1.4 Petrol but it was never fitted due to it being from a TDI.

I’m sure @Sarge will see this message and let you know how much he will want for it. I can send it out soon as you have had a chat with him.

Hopefully we can get Martin back on the road with fully operational brakes quickly.

Postage from my end will be FOC as a thank you for the parts donated to 250 last year.

Kind regards,

Tom

That's very kind of you Tom you are truly a gentleman, scholar and all round good en.
I will let you know if it's needed, obviously hoping it's just loose hose or similar.
Just on the point of replacing the servo, how easy a job is it?

Hi Mandy,

I left this work to my local independent.

What I can add though is that on the TDI there is a need to unbolt one of the engine mounts to allow enough room for manoeuvring the old Brake Servo out and the the replacement in. Unfortunately that’s pretty much the limit of my knowledge on this task.

I’m sure someone with greater mechanical skills that I will be along shortly…

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi RZX,
If the car is new to Martin & yourself I would start by checking the condition of the vacuum hoses as they deteriate
Internally & under the braided covering, I replaced mine with around 3m of hose from TPS doing each one at a time to avoid a mix up.
Hope that helps
Keith.

First thing to check is the connection onto the tandem pump vacuum port. The one on the top facing rearwards. This is known to become loose over time. If the hose can move then good chance that is some if not all of the problem. Check it cold and when the engine is hot. People have repaired this by bonding the spigot back into the pump or by replacing the tandem pump.

With the tandem pump I am not saying the hose is loose ( could be though ) I am saying the fitting in the tandem pump comes loose. Let us know what you find with this port.

There are two types of servo fitted to the tdi. One has an electrical plug and the other does not. Changing the servo is not too bad. Worst bit is around the pedal box. You will need a new plastic clip for the pedal and as they are NLA, I adapted a golf one. Once you remove the wiper motor, access is quite good. I did a thread here somewhere. As stated above, check it's not the tandem pump or hoses first.

Morning Mandy,

Just incase it is the Brake Servo at fault, here’s @Sarge’s item I can send out instantly should the need arise:

Thanks everyone, currently the conditions here are not suitable for car maintenance and we have guests this weekend so hopefully we will be looking into it next week. ??

Martin and a well known member have given the car a good look over and have concluded that it is the tandem pump, hopefully, as this will be considerably easier to replace than a brake servo. Parts due in later this week. Fingers crossed that cures some of the issues with the car.
