Brake shoe fittings

Hi all,

Took the near-side brake drum off today in order to strip and paint.

Unfortunately a small spring and some other bits and pieces seem to have ejected from the unit during removal. The two big springs are in place and I was wondering if the bits were actually from my car because I never noticed them come off at first.

Upon checking a pic on ebay of a pair of brake shoes I see that the bits are identical to some on there.

Unfortunately the pic doesn't show how the parts fit in. Anyone got any Ideas? Can't rely on the other side showing the solution as it might come apart in the same way and I only have a short time after work to get some of it done every day before the weekend when I plan to use the car again.

Cheers,

M

Take a look at this - it's the exploded diagram of the drum brakes and will explain how things go together far better than a wordy explanation:

Thanks Mike I'll take a look at that tomorrow. I've uploaded 3 pics of the parts and the shoes as they stand. If anyone has any input in the meantime then this would be appreciated. I get the feeling that the pin fits through from the back, through the spring and the shoe and then is held in place with the retainer 'clip'. But there seems to be a pin missing  Darn! At least the painted drum is looking good :D

Cheers,

M

PS in the pic of the surplus parts, I have actually put the 'stud' without a hole on it, onto what appears to be something containing the brake fluid as I think thats where it goes and I had accidently used the 'clip' in there. So there are two clips, two springs and a pin.

Mike - Parts 13,14 and 15. Are there supposed to be two sets of these parts for one drum and do you know if one fits the same way onto each shoe? Can't find that other pin anywhere.

Cheers,
M

Two sets of brake steady posts (13, 14, 15), one for each shoe. Can't remember now which one, but one of them gets caught up and trapped behind the brake back plate and will not just 'fall out'. It will be caught up somewhere behind on the handbrake cable, shock mount, suspension arm or whatever...........

Thanks for the help there guys. I managed to find the pin after much frustrated searching. All back together and the drum is looking great. I think that I will need to bleed the brake at the back as perhaps there is an airlock. Brakes a bit spongy.

Will have to get that Audi A2 manual installed on my other computer soon. Bought it off ebay and the installation instructions are pretty arduous to follow. Will have another bash at that next weekend though.

Cheers,
M
