Brake Upgrades

Whilst the discs and pads are not particularly worn, the callipers and other components are looking tired.

Was just going to paint the calliper but now thinking if I’m keeping this is it worth a slight upgrade to the front brakes, or is it really not needed?

What have others done/recommend?

Looking again the disks and pads are pretty much new but have corroded due to being stood

Can the disks be refinished to remove the rust or is it just easier to buy new?

Also thinking the disc guards would be better replaced, looking on eBay there seems to be a lot of different ones

I’ve fitted Fabia VRS hubs so have a 288mm brake setup now. The braking difference is night and day. Just fit behind my alloys though.

Yes, you can have the discs skimmed but for the cost forget it, simply buy new. Jump straight to the video for light entertainment.

Looking at your discs that is is only light surface rust, I expect that will clean up naturally simply by using the car. If it bothers you have a look at Google "clean rust off car discs" for inspiration.

Lastly the disc splash guard is item 6 below, buy from local Audi or TPS if possible or Crewe Audi on here, about £20 each I would think. The three little securing bolts can be a right pain to remove, replace with stainless from the likes of Toolstation.

There was a Crewe Audi group buy for brake splash guards / dust shields and it was surprising how cheap they were.
That was in 2017 so it may be worth checking the latest prices - and possibly another group buy

Cheers Spike

Thanks, have had a read through and found the info

Unfortunately looks like the thread is now locked so can’t comment on it, wondering if anyone has the part numbers to hand

Interesting… the standard disks do look small too

Is this the right part or is it the older VRS is should be looking for?

Yes, that is the right part.
If you are looking individual parts, left brake caliper should be ATE 581 or vw no. 1K0615123E
