Brake warning light on dash

Hi all

I've had the above-mentioned warning light come on on the dash. I've checked the brake fluid level, the brake pads and shoes all of which seem to be fine.

So I'm going to replace the shoes this weekend to begin with. I have noticed that one of the retaining springs that holds the shoes in place has corroded & needs replacing. Are these easily sourced or is there a particular part number I need to get one?

I'm hoping to get the shoes from gsfparts.

I think I've read all the threads regarding the drum removal which were very helpful, its the springs with the end cap that has a slot in it that I'm concerned about.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Bridge the wires at the plug before the pads, see if that fixes it then you know its the plug maybe.
Brake lights working ok?

not sure but one of the lights on the dash doubles as a duff brake light switch

Cheers for the replies guys, turns out it was the brake pads. I changed them first and warning light disappeared after that. I then decided to change the shoes anyways as I had bought them and a fixing kit. Boy am I regretting doing that, what a b!tch of a job. The fact that the hub stays in place when you remove the drum makes the whole process twice as hard. And of course the pistons also popped out which means I need to bleed the brakes, grrrrrr.

Changing the shoes on my old mark1 golf was a breeze compared to this. If I was to do this again I'd definitely take the hubs off but I think I'd need a 30mm socket to do that.
