Brakes are acting crazy

Yes that is where they normally fail. Before you disconnect the fuel hoses please make sure you completely cover ALL THE RUBBER HOSES AND ELECTRICS in the right side of the engine bay. The diesel will RAPIDLY DESTROY any rubber it comes in contact with.
Also remember to get a good quality metal gasket that contains the 2 extra little tracts of silicone. Bosch pump definitely the way to go.

Just an update. I've swapped out the old LUK tandem pump and replaced with Bosch ( secondhand I think it was from a passat..). Huge difference, no deadspot at the top of brake pedal like I had before and no brake fade down steep hills, and things sound quieter when engine is running too.

Here the old LUK pump

This spigot is loose and wobbly, apparently a common failure point, and where vacuum leaks. I could feel it loose on the car and obvious off the car.

I used this gasket, all seems fine at the moment

Quite an easy job
Hope that helps someone out. Cheers

Really glad you have fixed your brakes problem. Check over the next week or so to make sure there are no diesel leaks from any of the pipes or the pump as it will destroy all the rubber hoses.
