Brakes!

I was going to replace break shoes on my 1.4 tdi, 51 plate but there was enough 'meat' on them to leave alone so I just cleaned everything up. I think they are supposed to be self-adjusting but the mechanism does not seem to be working and I could not click it so I just left it alone but it's causing me some anxiety now.
Also my handbrake does not seem to be holding and I wonder if I can adjust this too. I think I've located the nut under the ashtray at the rear but I haven't done anything because I'm not 100%.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
 
Genius! You really are AMAZING! How could you know I was going to ask that before I did? I used copper grease instead of WD but that adjuster isn't budging so what do I replace?
Is the handbrake adjuster under the ashtray for the rear seats?
Is it ok for me to adjust it?
 
Nothing you can udjust if the leaver is not moving. Go to your original thread and check out all the info in Spike's link.
 
The automatic adjuster is like a small wedge, attached to a spring, which keeps it tensioned. As the brake shoes wear, the wedge is pulled down further by the spring.

I dont really understand how yours cannot be working :S
