Maybe some of you already have broadband, therefore already know this but WOW!!

Just got it today. Cant believe I managed for so long without it!!

I have one prob though. It only seems to work when plugged into my main phone point (i.e. point for the main BT line connection). It wont work in any of the extensions around the house.
Does anyone have any experience with broadband. Any idea why the extension points dont work, and more importantly how I can resolve it.

Thanks for any help offered.

I don't have experience of BT broadband as I have Telewest. Does it use the same phone line or did they run in another line specifically for the broadband? With Telewest, I have a dedicated line, purely for the internet.

As for the WOW factor, I have to agree. I've had it for about 18 months and am still impressed with the speed of downloads, or the fact that you can have half a dozen web pages open simulateously - and its still amazing ly quick.

I could never go back to dial up.

WIth BT Broadband you normally need to put a filter on every socket on the line that they enable broadband on.

The filter plugs into each phone point and provides a separate socket for plugging in either your Broadband modem and a normal phone socket. It works by spitting off the high frequency digital signal (Broadband) from the old analogue signal.

If you don't use the filters then you can upset your normal phones and vice versa.

If it still doesn't work then the wiring of your extensions could be to blame.

Sky digiboxes can cause problems as well. Over Christmas my DSL line was u/s most of the time - after unplugging the Sky box everything returned to normal. [:I] And then there was the time my wife rewired the entire phone system while vacuuming... ;)

Thanks Dave,

Had already fitted the filters, however it seem to be the fact that the extensions had additional capacitors in them!!! (Dont know the reason, however I cut them out, and now all's well)

Glad you got it working Kaine,

Capacitors are normally an indication of a BT master socket I thought ?

I have the inverse problem in that I want to re-use my old BT extension wiring for my NTL phones. To do this I want to tap into the wiring and disconnect the BT feed . But before I do that I have to leave a BT master socket on the BT side. For some strange reason the master socket in our house is in the kitchen !

You should register on the BT website to log your interest in Broadband, it is this information they use to assess the order in which BT are installing broadband.

The more the merrier as it boosts our equipment sales.

Ian,

I registered interest today and checked the status of the exchange, It could well be a very long time till we get Broadband in our area.

Trigger Point 250 registrations
Those registered as of today 87.

We will keep on plugging (in slow time)

Having spoken to some of the experts at work they presume that you have the BT master ADSL socket - this includes a filter which stops the ADSL from reaching the other sockets in the house. The benefit is that you should not need filters on the extensions, with the self-install packages the ADSL reaches all the sockets and you need a filter everywhere you plug in a phone - the downside is that ADSL is only available in one place.

See http://www.ftel.co.uk/uk/products/consumer/fdx310_faqs.html (you may not have this modem but the principle applies to others) and in particular the answer to the question "I have already had ADSL installed and BT came to install some wiring for it. Can I use microfilters?" about half way down."

Hope this helps.
