Just thought I'd pass on a good find in terms of an independent mechanic, CT Cars, near Guildford. The place doesn't look much as it's in an outbuilding on a farm, but Ian seems honest and reliable and is very reasonable on his pricing.
I just had the cam belt and tensioner replacement done by him, plus inspecting and adjusting the rear brakes, all for £311 (£250 of it was for the cam stuff on the 1.4 TDi). Guildford Audi quoted me £605 for the cambelt/tensioner replacement alone! So, got the replacement done for about 40% of the cost of the dealer.
Also, I ended up having 95,000 miles on the clock before replacing the cambelt/tensioner and she ran fine all the way. In fact, can't find any difference to pre/post replacement other than peace of mind knowing it was supposed to be done 15,000 miles ago.
