Cambelt snapped!

A collegue at work has a 54MY 1.4 TDi SE which has covered 42,000 miles.

It broke down at work and it turns out the cam belt snapped which has caused £1200 worth of damage.

This seems very early in it's life to go this way, is this likely at 42,000 miles?

She got the car from Carcraft, and it's out of warranty, what are the chances of this being clocked, and any chance of a goodwill gesture from Audi?! You've gotta hope!

She's gutted! Especially with mine being older (done less miles though)

Cheers Andy

40k miles = 60k kms. Change interval is 50k km, I think... no, it's 90k.

It is quite early, if it's been audi-serviced you'd have a chance of something back, but if not, then ....

This is the thing with cambelts every car that i've had i've changed the cambelt just about straight away even if it didn't need it Miles or age its your own piece of mind thats one thing out of the way.
The other thing is it may have done 42k around town which puts alot of straighn on the belt all that stop start, and yes getting it from car craft you don't know anything about the previous owner look at the one we had on here last month openly said he drove over 110 .
Good luck with Audi (not a chance in Hell)

Cheers Phil

There's no real comeback from Audi unfortunately - they warrant their parts for 2 years, but as the cambelt is presumably the original one, then it will be well out of warranty, even if it's within the mileage limits.

The thing is though, mileage aside, the rubber of the cambelt will perish and crack, which is why it is recommended that a belt is changed roughly every 60K miles or 4 years.

Cheers,

Mike

you could phone audi customer services to see when it was serviced if at all at an audi garage and make your plan from there.

Yikes. Is there anyway of spotting a cambelt that's due a change? Are there warning signs - cracks or anything?
