Cambelt - Update

:(Hi Guys, I went back to the garage today and they said the tensioners have gone which is what made the cambelt shred. When we first discussed the work that needed to be done on my car i did ask them to do the cambelt and water pump, but did not ask them to do the tensioners and in my defence i didn't know this needed to be done also. I would have thought that the mechanics doing the work would assure me that this would need doing. The owner said the way forward is for me to buy a new cambelt kit and they would do the labour for free, i then asked them about whether the damage might have gone to the rest of the engine. He said he's not sure but not to worry as we will be able to sort it out.

Does anyone think this is good enough as i do understand their point in a way, but this would't have happend at an Audi Dealer.. would it?

You are right in saying that this wouldn't have happened with Audi.

However, the cambelt kit comes with a new tensioning roller, so that should have been replaced too - saying that the tensioner has gone is no defence and you should not be dipping into your pocket anymore

Cheers,

Mike

Now i'm not sure both TDI and petrol versions are the same, but last time i changed my cambelt, it came in a kit, including a tensioner. While installing the kit, mechanics saw that the extra oil-filled tensioner was about to fail, and asked me to buy one in order to change it too.
And they weren't asudi specialists...

Cambelt

Didn't get a a chance to speak to the the guy doing the work at the garage yeterday but i did get a look at my car, and they have the cylinder head off. I suppose something must be wrong in there so i'm gonna have to wait untill this evening to see if they have a result.

In meantime i may have to think about cutting my losses :( as the damage has only cost me another £86 and all the labour is free, i can recover some of the inconveience with these free items the next time i go back to them = MOT, FRONT + BACK BRAKES, SERVICE :) .

But what i would like to have is for the central locking device to closes the opensky sunroof as well.

Does anyone know how this procedure is done, and can they do this without me sweaing and them messing it up?

Comments please!

Hey mate. Sorry to hear about the crap going on with the cam-belt. Only just read the thread again. Glad to hear that you are only having to pay a small cost and you're getting all of that back and more with the freebies they have offered though. Nice one and here's to many more miles of trouble free motoring!!

Catch ya laters,

Cambelt

Yeah mate i hope so too, but i didn't realise how much i miss my car now. Dispite what's happend i will be keeping this car for as long as possible, and to think it was the wife who had a passion for them in the first place! Nice one luv :D

It can't be done I'm afraid - the only ways to close the sunroof are either via the button, or by locking the car with the key in the door and holding the key in the lock position until it closes.

Cheers,

Mike

Please indicate which post was censored - from your stats, you have posted 1 comment on a Polo spare and a few regarding oil from Costco, plus this one about why a post was censored - I can't see what has been altered and I am an admin.

Cheers,

Mike

Any mechanic worth his/her salt would replace the tensioner pulley as a matter of course. It's like fitting new tyres but not balancing the wheels - it just doesn't make sense.

See what happens when the tensioner pulley fails - this is on an A4, and the part was fitted from new and failed less than 2 years later. Result - engine kaput. Audi now replacing under warranty.;)

Hi guys, finally got my car back last night :D after they searched the universe looking for a starter motor that had burned out trying to fix the inital problem which was first THE CAMBELT, THEN PISTONS, THEN SUMP GASKET, and now it's all done. I got to say that it does drive smoother for a rebuilt petrol engine. The garage didn't charge me anything extra apart from the new cambelt kit which was £84.00, and i get a free mot, service and front+back brakes replaced next time.

I think it's time to move on though and get myself a desiel engine as there isn't much you can do to these petrol one's, and i'v seen quite a few bargains around since mine was off the road

Sounds like a good result in the end. When I last had my timing belt changed about a year ago, the garage asked me to wait while they checked the condition of the hydraulic tensioner. They came back to say that this was worn out and if not replaced in addition to the standard timing belt kit, it could be as bad as having a worn-out timing belt. The additional cost was around the £84.00 mark as you say so it doesn't sound like they ripped you off in my view. He showed me the worn out parts afterwards so I felt reassured.
