Hi Redcap,

Does your 2001 car still have the original battery? Sounds like it has gone flat. Was this morning cold in your area? It is common for old batteries to work fine right up until the first cold morning, when they just die of old age.

John.

The car is a 1.4 SE TDI, I have been using the car up to Saturday evening, but i did not use it at all on Sunday.
I would really like to think it was something like the battery and yes it is the origanal battery. the battery sounds quite lively it must take a lot of power to turn a diesel over?

Hi Redcap,

I can't quite work out from your description what is happening. If the engine is making one revolution and stopping, how can it sound lively???

If the starter motor is able to crank the engine without slowing down when you turn the key in the ignition, then the battery seems okay. If the engine doesn't start and the starter motor won't keep spinning the engine, then the battery is nearly exhausted. If you have a battery charger, you could try to charge it up, but I don't think this is a long term solution.

:d

It's the battery. Although our 1.4 diesel is small in comparion to other engines, it takes a lot of power to start one. The forces going into starting a diesel are bigger then the ones in petrol ones. Try a different battery or charge the old one and see what happens.

Hi All
Sorry for the confusion, what i was attempting to discribe was the initial symptoms, the car cranked over on revolution as if to start, but this was short lived, the car will turn over but will not fire for ignition, battery appears to have life in it.
Thank you all for your views, i will look at the battery in the morning, keep you posted.

Hi All,
Just to let you know it was a glow plug that was at fault, so i have changed all three, just in case.
Thank you all for your assistance

Thanks for the update - didn't think it had been that cold for a dodgy plug to be the cause, but there you go!

Cheers,

Mike
