A big problem today, my car refuses to start. battery is ok because the radio and lights are working, but if i turn the ignition on, no reaction. No DIS waring light it says OK. i have tried both keys. looks like transponder of the keys or the computer ???. Have one one of you had this before and what can i do to solve this problem

Put your lights on when dark and try starting. If your battery or starter is at fault lights will dim down dramatically as starter tries to throw.Just a wee tip to rule out the battery/starter.If lights ok then inclined to look deaper into whats in between starter and battery (fuses etc).As this is normally a straight connection from battery to starter the cabling tends to be chunky and any fuse will be a monster because of the current needed to throw an engine over.If all ok check connections at starter and battery.Failing that I'm not familiar with the electronic side of.Don't know how the immobiliser (that could also be suspect) interacts with the starting side.Maybe Skipton or Spike could help:)

Thanks to all of you who have replied,

it had happend 3 times today. the first time was solved in 2 minutes. by just opening en closing the door from the remote controle en closing en opening the doors. the second time it dit nothing for half an hour. I took of the - of the battery en then it started. When i was het home, i stopped the engine en then after 10 sec. trying to start the enigine it was again completely dead.

After 2 hours and then trying to start en it just simply started. then stopped the engine a couple of times again starting and every time it normaly started.

But i think the problem is not solved and will come back very soon.

if the central locking is connected, my money goes on the Comfort control black box.

Stupid question: is it possible to start the car *without* the "Komfortsteuergerät" (the one above the engine control box) connected?

Today i went to the stealer, they said it maybe been caused by a ignition barrel switch, so they have replaced it. so i hope the problem has been sloved by replacing the part. I keep you informed if it helps.

Thanks for all your help so far.

This morning trying to start my car, and again it failed to start:mad:

When trying to start i heard a ticking noise (that looks like your battery is flat(a blinking red battery icon on my dashboard) But NO indication on my full DIS(big yellow icon) and if disconnect the battery and connect it , the car started. very strange.

It occurs at cold and warm start. Wiggle the key to start won't help.

Small wire to start engine

I have not looked at the A2 specific but from a start engine there is usually two cables: one thick and one smaller. The smaller is usually wired to the dash boards battery symbol/light. If that doesn't light steady (flash or dead) then your starter will not get power through the fat cable (thus not work).
The problem could be fixed by changing the small light in the instrument or more likely - check the connector at the starter engine. It's usually got coated with verdigris so replace the connector or spray/brush them.

Problem solved? I've had similar kind of problem once. I run diagnostic with VAG-COM:

16705 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Implausible Signal

P0321 - 35-00 - -

And info I've found for this error_msg
-->Possible Symptoms

Engine shuts off
Engine doesn't start
Speedometer inoperative
Glow Plug Indicator Lamp (K29) flashes

Possible Causes

Engine Speed Sensor (G28) loose
Engine Speed Sensor (G28) faulty

Possible Solutions

Check Engine Speed Sensor (G28)

Special Notes

The Engine Speed Sensor (G28) is also used as a reference sensor for the crankshaft position and correlates with the Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1 (G40) and Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 2 (G163).

----
How I managed to start the engine was:
I put 5th gear on. I pushed the car about 1 strike and tried to start. I heard "nix nax", but not started. I pushed once again and yes, it started. Explanation for this is maybe that this speed sensor which is acting also as crankshaft position sensor did not know engine position. Pushing the car at 5th gear on rotated crankshaft and position was recognized..
Maybe there was short circuit at this sensor, because my oil cooler is leaking a bit an sensor is located nearby...
