CCCU change, battery drain and locking problems.

Hello and greetings from Northern Europe. I bought A2 petrol 1.4 2001 earlier this year and have been reading this great forum ever since! I have had problems with battery drain (about 4-5 days when not in use) and with locking.

Symptoms for locking problems: usually opens when tried couple of times, when open/close, all doors/boot are opening/closing and fuel flap works ok. When cold/rainy central locking ticks and flashes lights. I did scan and got error codes: 01031, 01331, 01332, 01333, 01334, 01560, 01561, 01562, 01559. I changed module and wires from the main door and also parts that are next to lock cylinder. Battery drain is difficult since it does not show draw when locked so I assumed something wakes car later from sleep mode.

Have been reading that CCCU is very unreliable at earlier models and think that it would be worth to try newer one. My unit is 8Z0 959 433 C and year 2000. At least it was dry. Checked part number matrix and understood that AF version is very reliable and should also work with manual rear windows model. Since AF is the newest model will my connectors/pin arrangement fit or if not, can I make it work with new (used) wire set with plugs that will fit? I understood that frequency for keys is possible different so new fobs also (8Z0 837 231D). But when I look the matrix both models seem to use PR-5D1 number 433.92MHz? Using locks without remote would not be deal breaker tough. Are all the AF models with remote locking? There is never PR codes with CCCUs when checking eBay.

All help appreciated, thanks a lot for your great work so far!

The AF CCCU will be plug and play in your car. Most sellers will sell you the cccu and a matching fob. All you need to do is fit the replacement cccu and swap the bottom half of your key fob over. It can be recoded to the cccu by holding the unlock button with the ignition on for 10 seconds.

@Kleynie currently has one advertised for sale. If he isn't able to post to Europe, I will have on in a couple of weeks and will be able to do so.

Hello and greetings from Northern Europe
Hello and welcome to A2OC. Is 'Northern Europe' Nordkapp or Luxembourg?

Have been reading that CCCU is very unreliable at earlier models and think that it would be worth to try newer one. My unit is 8Z0 959 433 C and year 2000
This is correct. The early CCCUs are very unreliable, and their failure can result in battery drain.

Since AF is the newest model will my connectors/pin arrangement fit
Yes, the electrical connector arrangement is identical for all CCCUs.

Are all the AF models with remote locking?
Yes, though only with the later key fobs. The earlier key fobs (as supplied originally with your car) will not work with an AF CCCU.

The AF CCCU will be plug and play in your car.
This won't be the case for a left-hand-drive A2. Coding changes will need to be made in order for the new CCCU to interface correctly with the rest of the car's electronics.

Cheers,

Tom

"Northern Europe" I mean Finland. My A2 is originally from Germany and left hand drive. I have a friend who can help me coding with VCDS full version. I understood that I’m able to use car before that, even though all the electronics is not working. Changing CCCU is quite easy and cheap to test next so will try that. Hopefully battery drain and locking problems are from the same cause. Will report what happens when get one installed. Thanks a lot and will ask CCCU from Kleynie or Steve if not able to find one easily and fast from ebay. I was able to fix gear change problem, I’ll post later report about it since somebody may have same kinda problems.

Ok I got CCCU AF unit and changed it. Very easy and I was lucky because it would have been working without coding, even rear doors lock (with manual windows). Changed coding a little bit leaving “Comfort function via radio” off.

But locking is still not working properly, all 3 other doors than driver’s door are having problems. Seems that sometimes they work, sometimes not. They are locking every time but not always opening and not showing the right status when locked. Maybe microswithches/bad soldering joints? When I put the power on, locks are doing something every time, not sure if the driver’s door but sounds that at least others. So do I have to change all other 3 door modules next? What are part numbers for 2001 gasoline version modules with manual rear windows? I understood that microswitch is at the module so maybe I change whole modules or is the microswitch only weak part?

moi. terveiset Lahest :)

Read the codes, they will state if it's microswitch or not.

How new is the battery? How often is the car driven?

Hello and thanks! ? Yes my message was not detailed enough but this seems to be situation:

01561 - Rear left door 59-10 - Can't Unlock - Intermittent
01561 - Rear left door 61-00 - Won't De-Safe
01562 - Rear right door 59-10 - Can't Unlock - Intermittent
01562 - Rear right door 61-10 - Won't De-Safe - Intermittent
01560 - Passenger Door 61-00 - Won't De-Safe
01031 - Central Locking Key Switch; Driver Side; Unlock 27-00 - Implausible Signal
So I was thinking that it’s either wiring or door module/microswitch problem. Maybe good idea to check wirings first. Does Central Locking Key Switch mean button at the door? There was red light all the time before changing CCCU now not but unlock button does not work. Maybe change that too at some point. There was very little door modules at eBay but I don’t know part numbers at least all of them. Battery is 2018 and stays charged at least 2 months when not connected. Car is driven very little at summertime but every day at wintertime. I think it keeps charged when used every day. Thanks for the link gotta try to translate it. I think maybe it would be a good idea to get cards repaired if problem is there. Car can be used as long it locks all the doors but using is not too convenient.

are you sure the new CCCU is from a car with four or two electric windows, the same as your previous one?

where are you in this country? We might be passing by in a couple of weeks with some serious knowledge :)

- Bret

Well I understood that it does not matter if it was 2 or 4 electric windows before since AF unit can handle both. “Everything about Audi A2 door locks” at the A2-freun site was interesting. There was said that:
“For the rear, these locks probably fit in every A2:
BackRight: 7L0839016D, BackLeft: 7L0839015D

They can be found in Golf, Touran, Jetta, Touareg, Toledo, Altea, Octavia. There they were installed in different periods from 2003 until today.”
I checked that there was 7-pin connector which I understood I do have with 2001 model. Has somebody here been installed successfully those parts? I understood that it has been quite critical that the locking system part is original and year also?

Yes it would be a good idea to meet, I’ll send PM to you so let’s talk about it more.

Yes I checked out channel 61 and it's 03 (with radio remote control, manual window lifters in rear). Timmus said at the other post that "CCCUs that are able to control the rear door locks themselves (and are therefore suitable for use in cars with manual rear windows) include: 8Z0 959 433 AF".

That's correct. The AF units are suitable for A2s with 2x electric windows and 4x electric windows, but the value of Adaption Channel 61 must be set appropriately.

Morning all

I changed the CCCU from a Q to an AF, no problems, just 2 weird things. I need to get the 2nd key fob reprogrammed as it only works via the door look which is ok for a spare at present(Don’t think the 2nd key belonged to the CCCU but freq is same) but the good one eats CR2032 batteries ? No I don’t lay the keys on something that keeps it pressed in, no the battery is the right way round? Any ideas. I can’t wait for summer, I hate dark days and nights.

Re battery, there are millions of these button batteries out there that are beyond there best by date or cheap Chinese ones.

Strange I know, Good Panasonic ones with long use before dates and I multi tested them and each was 3.20v so I don’t know ? Plot thickens haha

Hello! I've been busy and not been here for a long time. But to my original post, battery drain issue was solved after changing CCCU to AF unit. Even tough my battery shows just about 60% capacity (should change to new one) car starts very well even when it’s below zero. Battery drain was difficult to track since there was no parasitic drain when measuring battery / fuses when locked.

@Tim147 The long term drain caused by the faulty CCCU has damaged the battery. Every time the battery is flat is looses some ability to fully charge. As yours is now 60% capacity, at the very least I would either have a jump pack or jumper leads in the car at all times especially due to the climate. A replacement battery will be needed. You could always buy one when on sale and keep it until needed.

Yes, going definitely to buy a new battery now that drain has been solved. Thanks for the help and will start new topic what comes to locking problem.
