I attempted this a few years ago, primarily to change the backing plate, as the brake shoe kept slipping off the brake cylinder piston after several brake cylinder replacements and it was suggested that the backing plate might be warped. However, I got stuck when I found that the bolt heads holding the backing plate on were so rusted that I could not get them to turn at all. So off it had to go to the garage. I don't know if you are having the same problem with brake shoe slipping off the brake cylinder piston, but another member said that cleaning off the backing plate where the brake cylinder makes contact to it sorted their problem with the brake shoe slipping off the brake cylinder piston.

I admire your perseverance laimis.

The wheel cylinders have a "step" or raised sides, these point away from the back plate and prevent the shoes coming off the wheel cylinders by hooking the upper edge of the shoes behind them. There are little teflon pads that the shoes ride against on the back plates. If they are worn wise to replace them.

i thought that was the case, they were re-fitted from the back of the plate by a re-tard, thats why my brakes failed and i had to re-do them :O
