Changing Gearbox on my A2

Hi
About six monthts ago I changed the engine on my A2 and now the time has come to do the gearbox :( Well, I was stupid not doing it when I had everyting out last summer. There was no oil on it AT ALL so I should have changed it then but it worked fine, and it still do actually, no broblems shifting gears or anything. So I filled it up with new oil and put i back in. But I have notising some noise from it now, of course there is some bearings that are gone in there. I dont know how long it has been whitout oil (to long obviusly).
The pre owner(s) of this car have done a good job in killing it, maintenance must hve been totaly absent. But, a new box is ordered and I hope the "new" one have lived a better life then the one I have. The one I have ordered has about 130k on its back, it shouldnt be a problem if it have been treating well.

One thing I noticed when I was looking for a new box is that there is lot of different gearbox codes (mine is a FCU) even on identical cars, is that correct?
My car is an 2002 1.4 petrol AUA and I think I have seen identical cars with different gearbox codes. Could I have used a box with a different code, if not what is the differences. I have of course searched for it on the net and found some info about it but I would bee interested in hearing if anyone have some experience about it.

So now I am waiting for my new box to arrive. I have also planed to change it myself, problem is that it is winter and cold and a lot of snow and no good place to do it so I guess I just have to wait for better days but I am unpatient, I want my A2 back:rolleyes:

Hi Arildoss
Hope you get it sorted (and you have a warm garage to do it in!)

I recall sometime back it was stated that there is no oil change in the Audi A2 service plan and that the gearbox is "sealed for life". However, many of us have found it does use oil. I had the 5th grear upgrade at 50k miles and the gearbox was only 1/2 full with black oil. It was replaced. It will need doing again soon.

Hi Alan
That was interesting to hear.
Yes it does use oil, as i wrote my gearbox was empty and there were no sign of any leakage as far as i could see.
And it was also interesting to see that you had a 5th gear upgrade. Because the noise i hear comes from that end of the gearbox. What was the reason for you to do the upgrade and what did the upgrade include?

Hi Arildoss
Did the upgrade for economy and quietness as I was doing a roadtrip to Sweden. It can be a bit of a nusience if you are doing C roads and some B roads as one is keep having to change from 5th to 4th and vv. Depends what sort of driving you do.

There is an option as to the 5th gear ratio. I went for 0.65 and Skipton did it. Long time ago but besides the gear and oil I think there was just a gasket and only the nearside wheel needed removing and a plate on the gearbox (from memory) and it took Skipton about 90 mins.

I think this was the thread https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/group-buy-order-0-65-0-643-5th-for-tdi.11914/ I's 25 pages long!

the 5th gear bod is only suitable for the remapped TDI engines, the 1.4 petrol would not be able to pull a longer 5th gear unless the engine had had some serious playing with
