Changing oil improves MPG?

I've just changed the oil in my TDI to the castrol edge stuff and it appears to have improved the mpg significantly. Where i was getting 57 mpg on a short run, i'm getting nearer 63mpg, which seems considerable improvement. Is this something people have seen before?

there was a programme on tv recently that tested various methods/gadgets to reduce consumption, from memory the best results were from a guy that gave his (old duffer astra) a full service oil etc, so i'm guessing your findings would prove that point.

Hi clong
That's about a 10% improvement so it must be a combination of factors and can't be all down to the oil change. The oil could account for 2 - 3% improvement and the rest may be due to warmer, drier or less windy weather conditions plus garages change from winter to summer diesel this time of year.

Cheers Spike

The oil didn't need changing, it was done when i bought the car 4k miles ago, but i didn't think the engine felt right. I changed the filter aswell, which looked filthly, although is the first filter ive changed that wasn't in a case. Maybe the garage used the wrong oil?

I'll get a more accurate figure over the whole tank, so i'll post back here when its done.

I found a significant difference in the running of my a2 tdi changing from the variable service to the every 10k service. It likes a change of oil and filters!

I have always found an oil/filter change especiallly when using a diesel specific full synthetic has improved MPG and gives a smoother engine for a while.
