Chasing down rattles and squeaks

I have this irritating noise to the left of me (although it can be intermittent) It sounds like this :- "David, put your seat-belt on!" / "You are too near to that car in front!" / "Slow Down!" I have had it for quite a while!
Quite persistent, really, but I've (almost) learned to live with it .....

Hi, I have a very intermittent metalic noise that sounds like it is coming from the rear, sort of sounds like a metal surface quickly rubbing against another metal surface... It only happens for a second or two and as I say is very intermittent. If I had to try and describe the sound as best as possible I would say it sort of sounds like when a magician jangles two metal rings together (sorry odd reference I know) but sounds like that, only a fairly quiet version of that.

Any thoughts what that might be?

If it helps I have a 2003 1.6fsi just done 51k miles and fairly recently had new tyres and brake pads front and rear put on, but as I have only just bought the car I don't know if the noise was there before the new tyres and pads went on.

Could it be bearings or anything to do with the rear springs?

The springs can be visually checked, you can see the rear spring easily and so you can check that it looks complete and no broken coils.
I would imagine that the noise would be much deeper if it was a broken spring and the car would probably look to be leaning.

If it is a metallic sound (as you seem to be indicating) it is not the usual problem of the shock absorber cover coming loose.

It could be the brake discs binding slightly even.

But it is the kind of noise that you should have checked ASAP, even a decent tyre depot would normally check your suspension components for safety, for a small fee, if not free

Hi,

my car used to make a similar noise from the back. It turned out to be the upper catch on one of the rear seats. Try driving with the rear seat backs folded forwards to see if that makes a difference to the noise.

I solved the problem by placing a small folded piece of cloth behind the seat between it and the side trim so that the seat fits more firmly when locked in the upright position.

Andrew

Thanks Steve I will get it looked at to be on the safe side

Thanks Andrew, I will try that and also get it looked at as Steve suggested, thank you

The fsi has disc breaks rear, right? Check that your brake shields are not coming loose or has something stuck between the shield and the disc.

Just had the 'Drop Link' replaced on mine, (drivers side) and now I have a cracking noise from the front. Just been to another garage and Anti Roll Bar, Drop Links, Ball Joints, Springs, Top-Mount all seem good. Happens at random intervals.

Bit lost as to what could be the problem. Any ideas?

It is not the infamous "bonnet rattle" is it?

Tap the rear corners of the bonnet gently with the palm of your hand to see if they rattle?

But when you say "cracking" noise, that sounds structural???

Its like some metal banging on something. But sounds more of a crack noise than a click noise. Only started a few days ago....

If you have had the full suspension checked over there is little else to suggest.

The bonnet rattle can sound quite sharp depending on how bad it is, have you tried tapping the rear corners?

Is it only making the noise when turning, or does it happen when going straight ahead.

Only over bumps Large? or small too?

If someone has had the car up in the air and checked everything it is going to be difficult to diagnose remotely but we will have a go if you don't mind lots of questions (some appearing to be stupid ones)

Hi all, I too suffer from the usual interior creaks and squeaks coming from all over the place in my 2003 1.6fsi sport, but have found a product that may help.... I purchased a can of spray silicone lubricant from my local robert dyas (http://www.robertdyas.co.uk/wd40-silicone-lubricant-250ml) a few days ago, and using the straw on the end of the nozzle I have squirted some into the joins on the door handles, all over the rear seat catches and in the joins around the air vent, radio and climate panels on the center console... and this seems to have stopped the creaks completely.

It worked really quickly... before I applied it to the door handles, you would hear the creak noises when you hold them, but after spraying this along the join lines, then rubbing off the excess and doing it again, with the whole process taking around 30 seconds per door handle, the creaking noises were completely gone.

I am slowing working my way around the interior as I try to pinpoint where the rest of the noises are coming from... basically all of the joins in the paneling I think! But so far, after a few days of having used this, it has made a massive difference to the interior noises.

I don't know how long it will last, and you need to be careful to wipe up the excess if anyone else tries this, but so far I am very pleased with the effect it has had. The car is so much quieter to drive now!

Hopefully it may help someone else out there.

Thanks for this! I was going to investigate the creaking door panel handles as they are annoying when pulling the door closed.

I've got a really annoying one going on. It happens regularly at about 1400RPM when the engine's under a bit of load. Drive through the revs and it goes away. It's quite a metallic sound, appeears as if it's coming from behind the dash on the nearside, but don't think it can be the actual dash as it's such a metal-on-metal-sounding vibration.

Any thoughts?

Can it be something with the screen wiper motor? Isn't it behind the dash?

hi there :)

I've got one buzzing sound in passenger side C pillar. I suspect something in a belt tensioner(but it is covered with plastic?), could it be? Maybe anyone has it also?:) I've noticed it when was sitting there and there was such sound.
