Thanks! will check the above.I haven't checked the wiring diagrams, but there is a separate connection for the illumination, so it is probably fed from a different supply from the 12v socket.
Some thoughts, have you checked:
- The fuse
- For any corrosion on the contacts inside the lighter socket?
- Does your gadget converter reach all the way to the bottom of the cigarette lighter to make contact with the lower electrical point? (I had this issue on a CRV where I thought the lighter outlet fuse was blown, only to find the fuse was fine and 12v was present at the socket when I used a multimeter!

Hi BusBoyT2,So my cigarette lighter socket appears to have power as the ring of light comes on when the lights are on. BUT when I plug a USB gadget thing into it my phone wont charge. Any thoughts? I have tried multiple gadgets that I know work so I can eliminate that.
Thanks
Patrick
Also trying to fix my dud cigarette lighter. I've got all the bits out nicely, following the helpful guide on this site for removing the plastic around the handbrake, and see my lighter is part number 4BO 919 305. But I can't find a replacement part that matches this code online. Parts appear with this code but the metal unit is far stumpier in dimensions. The closest match in visual appearance I can find is a part listed on eBay as both 8K0919343 8E0919309 but that is for an A4, A5 etc and is sufficiently different to make me wary of ordering it, and waiting for it to arrive from China. After all this I'm still wondering if it's the fuse. The fuses all look OK, but the fuses in the panel under the steering wheel seem not to match what's in the guide book, for starters the smaller fuses are on the left not the right (is this because the manual is written in mirror image for other markets), and even taking this into account, the fuse ratings and gaps still seem to have little correlation with what they should be - yet the rest of the car works. And the correct fuse (15 amps) is in what I believe to be the correct slot (number 12). Any tips most appreciated. Off on a long journey with the family later this week to holiday in Coventry and Cambridge driving up from the South West and after two years of owning this car would love to be able to charge my phone in it! Thanks very much. Richard

Before replacing the fuses please visually inspect the interior of the socket for foreign objects etc. Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to replace a load of fuses for starters, and have looked more closely at the A4 part and it seems to be the replacement part number for 4B0 919 305, listed on eBay here. But will try and solve it with the fuses first.
