Cigarette Lighter Won't charge but has power

So my cigarette lighter socket appears to have power as the ring of light comes on when the lights are on. BUT when I plug a USB gadget thing into it my phone wont charge. Any thoughts? I have tried multiple gadgets that I know work so I can eliminate that.
Thanks

Patrick

I haven't checked the wiring diagrams, but there is a separate connection for the illumination, so it is probably fed from a different supply from the 12v socket.

Some thoughts, have you checked:
  • The fuse
  • For any corrosion on the contacts inside the lighter socket?
  • Does your gadget converter reach all the way to the bottom of the cigarette lighter to make contact with the lower electrical point? (I had this issue on a CRV where I thought the lighter outlet fuse was blown, only to find the fuse was fine and 12v was present at the socket when I used a multimeter!

Thanks! will check the above.

Try powering something from the accessory socket that is very simple - like a 12v hoover or light or led. Something that isn’t using power management at all - simple on or off.

I am sure that the lighting is separate - the power is on all the time but the lighting varies according to cabin lights etc.

I had a little corrosion at the bottom of my 12v after a valet and had to clean it. It was preventing the centre pin giving a good connection. Worth having a good look inside too.

Or your 12v to 5v adaptor is bust.

Yeah illumination seperate fooled me too!

Check a 5p coin isnt lodged in the base, think its a 15A fuse in dash panel towards lower right if remember correctly?

You could try a "Cigarette Lighter Voltmeter" to check the voltage.

It could take over 1 month to ship from China. I've got one and it works well. The display is nice and clear unlike some other models.

Hi BusBoyT2,
I’ve had similar problems with mine & found a new one listed on eBay for £2.50 with the correct part number, I’ve not fitted it yet due to other more important jobs ( brakes seized on ).

Also trying to fix my dud cigarette lighter. I've got all the bits out nicely, following the helpful guide on this site for removing the plastic around the handbrake, and see my lighter is part number 4BO 919 305. But I can't find a replacement part that matches this code online. Parts appear with this code but the metal unit is far stumpier in dimensions. The closest match in visual appearance I can find is a part listed on eBay as both 8K0919343 8E0919309 but that is for an A4, A5 etc and is sufficiently different to make me wary of ordering it, and waiting for it to arrive from China. After all this I'm still wondering if it's the fuse. The fuses all look OK, but the fuses in the panel under the steering wheel seem not to match what's in the guide book, for starters the smaller fuses are on the left not the right (is this because the manual is written in mirror image for other markets), and even taking this into account, the fuse ratings and gaps still seem to have little correlation with what they should be - yet the rest of the car works. And the correct fuse (15 amps) is in what I believe to be the correct slot (number 12). Any tips most appreciated. Off on a long journey with the family later this week to holiday in Coventry and Cambridge driving up from the South West and after two years of owning this car would love to be able to charge my phone in it! Thanks very much. Richard

This is my fuse diagram from my 1.4 tdi if that helps you...

Never just visually check a fuse you must use a meter as I have seen good looking fuses that were indeed blown. Replace the fuse with a new or proven good one.

"We" are the other markets remember Audi are German so LHD is the norm. The fuse box effectively was flipped over the centre console so rotated 180 degrees.

If this still does not work then fit another 12v socket hidden behind the dash and leave a phone charging lead in it. Have the phone end in front of the gear stick.

You can see the end of my lead here...

On my car I have a 12v socket in the boot and the 12v socket by the hand brake. I also have fitted behind the steering column a 12v adapter that has 3 12v sockets and 3 usb sockets. Into this I permanently have my phone charger lead, a dash cam, a speed detector and my in dash Garmin satnav. This adapter powers down when the ignition is off. The boot and hand brake sockets are permanently live.

Try 4B0 as the first 3 letters of the part number - 4B is the C5-generation Audi A6 from the same era as the A2, while the zero suffix indicates that it is a part common to all versions of that generation of A6. Putting a letter 'O' there will mess up a lot of searches.

(just did a Google search with the corrected part number - loads of lighter parts came up).

I’ll dig out my nos & post part number for you if that’s any help
Keith.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to replace a load of fuses for starters, and have looked more closely at the A4 part and it seems to be the replacement part number for 4B0 919 305, listed on eBay here. But will try and solve it with the fuses first.

Before replacing the fuses please visually inspect the interior of the socket for foreign objects etc.
I’ve have had a coin & also caused it with overzealous removal of a torch/charger plug.
If clear then safe to replace the fuse , it’s worth carrying a selection with any spare bulb kit etc.
Hope that helps you
Keith.
