Classic Car insurance for the A2

I’ve been using Adrian Flux for a few years. They are a broker but seemed quite happy with non-standard and unusual vehicle. Got the best quote for a VW camper as well as my A2 and my wife’s Smart Fortwo.

When I told them about my TT alloys, non standard tyre size, engine remap, vortex kit and A2OC badges there was no change to my premium (although she had to check about the badges)...

Adrian Flux do rip you off for additional fees though - in the old days (when I did car insurance) a broker had to live on their commission.

Just heard back from my specialist insurance company (Airsports International - AIB Insurance), they currently insure me for all of the cars.

1984 Scirocco Storm - heavily modified, agreed value etc. ~ £129
2003 Boxster - Won't do on classic car policy yet, as not quite old enough and I haven't owned it long enough - however, not bad at ~ £299, limited mileage
Pretty much any A2 (ie both my current runners) - not old enough for classic policies yet, they're saying about 20 years as most are, but ~ £269 each for the year.

Very good to deal with, and matched my single NCB across all the cars. I've been with them for about 5 years now, it's got to the stage where I know most of the front desk staff and when I call they ask "which A2 are we changing this time...?" :)

I had four cars insured with Aviva…… no problem until I had an accident…. They insisted and wanted me to go 50/50… all well and good however, the other driver jumped a RED light and T-boned my lovely Saab convertible (one of the safest cars on the planet)… it was a write off and I sustained injuries. This was two years ago…. Took 18 months to sort the injury claim. If I had gone 50/50 I would have had no injury claim, only found that out 6 months after the accident (so be forewarned). Insurance wise, I am now insured through Admiral. Have similar setup to Teresa? but other cars on policy as well.

Almost all of our cars are nonstandard in some way, whether remapped, nonstandard wheels, etc, and that's a problem for many insurers - and they must be told of anything nonstandard or you run the risk of a claim being declined. Previously I've used Adrian Flux but got annoyed with them when I realised that their add-on fees were almost as much as the base premium, so having passed the Institute of Advanced Motorists test I'm now using their scheme - about £230 from memory and they weren't bothered about the nonstandard bits on my car.

That’s a good recommendation and when my policies come up for renewal in (I think) November I will give them a try

I don't think there is enough value in an A2 to justify classic insurance. Plus they are restricted to very low mileage and the car has to be garaged, preferably at the owners home. I was quoted £250 for a 30 year old Golf valued at £12k, I'm very restricted by the policy terms on how, how much and where I can use it and it has to be stored at an agreed location.
By comparison the A2 is £120 fully comp and there are no similar restrictions, I even have a business users clause. Granted it is insured for market value but that too is what an agreed value classic insurer insures for, they know the classic market values for a range of vehicle conditions and models. You may be asking what is the difference; if the Golf were insured on a standard fully comp policy and I wrote it off the insurer would look at classified adds, there are loads of rough old Golfs, and come back with an offer of £5K. Yes I would haggle but there is no way they would go to £12k. By comparison the A2 is probably only worth around £1k on standard or classic insurance.

Well I have Audrey insured at an agreed value of £5000 - so if the worst happens, I won’t be (too) out of pocket.

I think "classic" or similar policies really only work if you have a car thats your "daily" and a car/s that are Classic/Enthusiast. At one time I had my S1 Elise, Landrover Series 3 and Honda S2000 on a policy from https://www.hagerty.co.uk/ for under £500 But its limited milage and I needed to have a daily driver too (which I did, on another policy). I had to move on from them as thier underwriter stopped doing heavily modified cars (my Elise) but things like alloys etc are not really an issue so anyone with a few interesting cars should give them a try. These days my Elise was with Competition car insurance and the A2 in on an Admiral Multi car policy with my Discovery.

Another reason to go classic is you don’t require NCD
