Cleaning advice please

Wonder the best way to clean the aluminium(?) strip on the boot of my A2.

It has black dots all over it - have rubbed it with a cloth and this makes the bigger ones smaller, but doesn't really get rid of them.

Also any advice on cleaning the wheesls appreciated - has a few big black stains on them and well as black dots.

Ideally don't want to spend a fortune on either issue if possible - thanks

Best wheel cleaner I have ever used is Wonder Wheels. This beats anything else I've tried, hands down!

It may work on the boot trim too, but be sure to rinse well afterwards.

Cheers,

Mike

Generally i agree with Skipton, (most of the time :D) as he knows his stuff

But i wouldn't even use wonder wheels on my wheels!! It is a very good cleaner that is a fact and skipton is right it is good generally. but i would keep it away from your paint due to the harsh chemical content, (thats why it burns if you get it on your skin). Probably a strong acid content?

I would use Autosol or Autoglym metal cleaner. I clean Manganese bronze, silicon bronze, Beryllium copper and a host of other metals for a collection I have. and it always works well.

Wonder Wheels is indeed very good, but is very acidic, and will spoil any polished metal surfaces. The Autoglym stuff is almost as effective, and seems a mite less acidic. Halfords own brand is also very good, cheap, and seems to be non acidic.

The black spots on the rear of the car are almost certainly tar spots from the winter roads. You can get tar spot remover solutions, but I have never found them mush use. I use white spirit on a clean rag (or use paper kitchen roll) and just wipe them away, very effective. Be sure to clean the car thoroughly first (so as not to scratch it) and also to polish the cleaned areas afterwards.

thanks for the suggestions - don't want to use anything to harsh so will start off with white spirit I think.

edit just looked on other sites and they also recommend paraffin, so might try that too as I plenty of it.

Hi again

Basic advice, try not to start with a harsh chemical and work to a weak one.. Start with the weak one and work up. Standard car polish will prob do it anyway;)

good Luck

For tar spots I've found that Turtle Waxs' Closs Guard is really good at removing.

For wheels I use my bicycle cleaner - Muc Off, usually on offer in H*lf*rds, spray it on, leave for a few mins and scrub with a nylon brush then rinse.
