Cleaning iced up windscreen

Car windscreen was iced up this morning. Didn't use de-icer, just a plastic scraper. Afterwards, I noticed some very fine faint scratches that you can just see when the sunlight is low in the sky.

Is the plastic on the scraper too hard, or should I be using de-icer?

Interesting. I suppose it is possible to scratch the glass with plastic if the plastic if tough enough.

To remove the marks, try a good glass polish (not the spray stuff, something like an Autoglym liquid paste type stuff). Will remove any Rain X or suchlike, but should bring the glass back to original condition.

Personally, I would use de-icer to clear the window, or a luke warm water then put the wipers on fast so it doesn't freeze again. Got to be careful not to crack the window.

I was watching QVC tonight and some guy was showing a demo of pre-deicer. You put the stuff on your window before it freezes and it means a quick use of the wipers and it's clear......but the windscreen looks smeary as heck. I reckon this stuff is a thick oil/gel so I don't know whats better-frozen window you can clean or a smeary mess.

I know which one I would go for.

This morning was one of the thickest frost for ages round here.
My method was to run the car for about 5 minutes with the front & rear windows being blown on & heated.
After a few minutes, the windscreen, rear window and majority of the front side windows were frost free. The only proper frost left to scrape was the rear side windows.

Can you feel the scratches or just see them? If they are only visual, a good polish as Steve sugested should do the trick.

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.

I can reccomend Auto-glym glass polish

If you use it on the front window it stops the wiper blade from squeaking, and also makes it easier to shift the dirt when doing the wash wipe funtion.

Tip : Rub some of the glass polish onto the wiper blade, this helps it glide more smoothly over the window and is also claimed to increase the life of the wiper blade.

I can't feel the scratches, so will try the glass polish. It's a cheap Halfords scraper, so will try a different one as well.

The scraper itself will not be scratching the glass, it will be grit the scraper is picking up, probably from the windscreen, which gets embedded in the edge of the scraper - not a lot you can do about it!

Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield are silver ? ? ?

Hi there - I've recently treated my screen and rear/side windows with Ombrello. If the screen ices up then all I need to do is to pour COLD water onto it and the melted ice & frost just run away like magic; no need to use the wiper. It does leave the odd water droplet but that's not a problem. Not a cheap solution but it does work. I'd recommend it.

I presume you live in the deep south, I have to be careful doing that - on days the frost does not break you are left with a layer of ice on the ground where the water has run off the car!
