Clutch Judder

Had A2 now for 5 years with little problem - apart from respray when garage ladders fell on car, central door lock mechanism change, intermitent management fault indication and 2 sets of front brake discs - but am now getting clutch judder in first gear.
Is this a common fault?
VW garage said can't adjust clutch as it is hydraulic, so what can i do!

Hi dicko

I don't recall any petrol owners reporting clutch issues so its certainly not a common problem. Judder is normally caused by oil on the clutch plate (leaking crankshaft seal) the clutchplate not moving smoothly on the spline of the gearbox mainshaft or a worn/damaged clutch release bearing. Unfortunately all would require removal of the gearbox for checking / repair.
Sorry there is unlikely to be a simple fix.

hi spike
wouldn't your mentioned clutch problems affect the use of the clutch through all the gear range as opposed to just first gear as i am having problems with>

HI Dicko

Try pulling away in third gear and see if you get clutch slip then it may be that you need to replace it

Hi dicko
Generally the clutch is working hardest from a standing start which is normally done in first gear. As you'r slipping the clutch for a couple of seconds, any judder is very apparent. Once the car is in motion the clutch is only used very briefly during gear changes when the judder would not be noticible. If there was a lot of oil on the clutch or the clutch plate is nearing the end of its life then follow Robin's suggestion on checking for slip.

has anyone replaced a clutch in their A2 yet?

so far "touching the proverbial" mine has covered nearly 130,000 on the original one, I've always had a bit of judder upon taking drive, even on courtesy cars, they all see to have a judder issue, I find if I rev it a bit more, I can make smooth getaways... but I tend to drive like a grandad so I just put up with judder...

oh and 1 set of discs & pads, and it's a dirty diesel on 02 reg, me from new.

you hit the nail on the head, i do have to increase revs to reduce judder. this sounds like my clutch is working normally.
