Coil Packs

Hi there, does anybody know the life expectancy of a coil pack. I drive a 2003 FSI which has 61,000 on the clock now. I average about 10,000 miles per year but this year I've had 3 coils go - a different one each time. Should I be surprised that Audi didn't change any of them or give me an advisory for them when they serviced the car last month at 60k? I'm wondering if it's worth replacing the fourth and final one before it packs up too! Thanks.

I think you have done well. I have a 2003 FSI and mine went at 4 years old 40,000 miles. Only one failed, but I replaced them all as a precaution (only £95 for the four). I kept two of the functioning old ones as spares, but have not needed them yet.

Dito.... only one of mine went at 32K, I replaced all 4. This was when we had the fantastic VAGPARTS. £95 all in, the stealer wanted £52 each  I've also kept the 3 good ones as back up stored under the false floor. Just one of those things I'm affraid

what an inspired storage choice! Mine are in the garage, but will be in the footwell from now on.

me too. 3 days ago 2 coils failed replaced them with bosch ones from europarts £23 inc vat each.mines a 2003fsi 47000 miles.

I've had 3 coil packs go this year, 2 which were replaced under waranty, then the 3rd a few months later, so replaced the last one at the same time. Mine is a 04fsi and they went around 28k

My early 1.6FSi (Sept 2002) had one replaced at 37 000 miles based on Audi diagnostic at Service (I wasn't aware of any problems). Car has now done 67 000 miles. I think they probably fail relatively early or go on 'forever'.

Thanks to all the respondents, looks like I haven't done too badly after all. Thanks also for the heads up on Europarts - I've ordered a replacement Bosch coil for the final one and a spare ...just in case! Merry Christmas one and all.

I dont think faulty coil packs are exclusive to the A2, if you do a quick Google there's strong evidence of problems across the VAG group - Im not up to speed with the techno - but I do wonder if the components are similar across the range of VAG petrol engines? My own experience of a faulty coil was a 2.5 yr old 28k mile Golf V6 whch almost resulted in an engine fire  Maybe as unipower says, they either fail at random intervals or owners never have any bother.

Used to have a 1.6 SE that I kept for 3 years. When purchased was 18 months old, having been an Audi UK car and only 2000 miles on the clock.

Covered around 20k over the next 3 years. In that time had 3 coilpacks replaced:eek:, once under warranty by Audi, the others by local VAG specialist. From information given by specialist seems to be a common thing, especially on A2 1.6s and TTs.

Also within the first couple of months needed the Lambda sensor replacing by Audi Preston:)( thats another story), well thats what they said, however symptoms were similar to coilpacks!!!

Still loved the car and was sad the day it left, but new family so needed something bigger. Purchased Seat Altea FR, (the first petrol one they'd sold) FSi turbo engine, as put in Golf GTi. Had for 2 years in April and done 23k without a hitch.

Needed a second car, so have just purchased a 1.4TDi SE. Having done a bit of searching would appear to be A2DK's old one!!!! So welcome it back to the club, after a 12 month absense.:)

we picked up my dads 2004 1.6 in july and had 3 replaced under the dealers warranty another has gone now i think its the one that wasnt replaced,
obviously the dealer will 1st harge me a diagniostic fee then for parts and labour.

if the part is available for £23 from euro parts i just wanted to know without the diagnostics tool is there anyway of finding out which one has failed?
how easy is it as a diy job?

harj

Chances are, if you have had 3 replaced they will look slightly different the the one remaining original one. Obviously they will be same size, but the exact finish or the writing/printing/embossing on top will be different.
At a guess I bet its the one on the drivers side thats original.
Why? well on my FSI that was the hardest to remove (lazy garage syndrome).

PM me or post on here if you need more help.

Happy Xmas.

coil packs; replacement

Hi there, after paying about £100 a pop for two (main dealer) replacement coil packs, have decided to replace 3 and 4 myself. Will it be as easy as it looks? Any tips? My car a 54 1.6FSI. Cheers
