Cold Start Issues

As winter is coming around again, I am reminded that my TDi has an intermittent warning alarm not long after taking off in the morning.

When the outside air temp gauge reads 5 degrees or below, I can hear a little pump whirring away (no idea what it does ) and on the odd occasion the central warning light on the dash plus the chime starts kicking off. Last winter when it happened I simply switched off the motor quickly whilst running, restart and thats the end of the warning light.

Any ideas what might be going on, and should I continue on with my technique of last winter or should it be going in to get seen to?

Cheers !

The noise is probably the Webasto coolant heater running (do you have a 2002 car or earlier?) which is fine. No idea on the warning light.

This morning there was -27 celsius outside and I started my 1.4 TDI. First two rounds in motor were very slov, then better and, -bum, engine was running at first start. I cannot say that it sounds like purring cat, it really was something else. After that engine fault and ABS warning lights were on. After restart there was only ABS warning light on but after driving about 200 meters and some brakings ABS light was also off. Different kind of voices and noises here and there (for example some very high sound from cabin heater), but car was working very well. Nice...

Just to mention, there is no webasto in my car..
